The price of steel

Hey gang,
After looking over my old pop up camper frame, I've decided to build a new frame.
I went out yesterday to get some quotes on 2x2x1/8 tubing. It has been a while since I bought any steel so I was shocked at the price.
A 20ft. piece of 2x2x1/8 square tubing was 142.00 dollars.
Is this normal nowadays?

Check around, that seems a little high. I think I paid $128 for mine. Of course I'm in Portland OR. That might make some difference, not sure though. Jim

Got a quote of $31.00 for 20' of 2x2"x11ga (0.120")

I'd find a different supplier.

does you steel supplier have a surplus yard? i know that's where i got my tubing for my trailer. it cost me $125.00 and i build a 5' x 10'. what happen is maybe a company buys a load of square tubing and they didn't need it all and they bring it back and the steel company cann't not sale it as new steel are a joint may have a bend it. the surplus yard is one of my favor place to go.

Jody:

Try W&W Steel in Tulsa. I got a quote from W&W in OKC for 2" x 2" x 3/16", 20' long for $55.99. They will charge you $60.00 per hour to cut to length. BTW, W&W has a different name in Tulsa, but do a googel search for W&W and both names will appear on the W&W site.

I just built my frame last week and a 10' length for 2 x 2 x .120 was around $20, and for 16G about $13. For all my steel it was around $140.00 and that was pretty good, I thought. That's here in Utah. THey had 10' or 20' lengths to choose from. I would keep looking.

I have my recipt here, I bought two 24ft long 2X2X1/8 sticks for $71.28ea, they charged $5 to cut them up. I bought them on April 25, 2005.
I did find out that steel comes in 24ft long sticks while aluminum comes in 21ft long sticks. I almost bought aluminum on accident.

Steel costs rose dramatically in 2004, and was a big time issue for contractors looking for price adjustment clauses in their contracts for steel intensive projects like bridges and high rise buildings. Similar situations have occured with rising gas prices. As with all things, steel prices are coming down, but I would check with another supplier!
