PL foam adhesive test

Postby _Ryan_ » Mon Jun 03, 2013 3:45 pm

In my build I used Titebond III and PL Premium for almost everything. I was planning on using PL Premium for the insulation but the label said not to use it on polystyrene, possibly because of the solvents might dissolve the insulation. So I went ahead and used PL 300 to be safe, but I wanted to test out both to see how they compared.

This was a quick test, not involved by any means. I tested 3 pieces of Styrofoam for each adhesive. The test from top to bottom goes as follows:

    1) Foil backed to Foil backed Styrofoam
    2) Foam to Foam
    3) Foam to Wood

Conclusions after 3 weeks:

The PL is stronger, but the PL 300 is very strong as well.

The PL Premium doesn't appear to have dissolved any of the insulation. However this was done in open air and it might be different in a confined space.

The more porous the surface the better. The wood and the Styrofoam surfaces were the strongest, but foil/plastic seal was more than sturdy enough for most uses. You can easily pick up the board by the top layer of the PL 300 glued Styrofoam.

I hoped this helped some of you. Cheers!
