Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Hi all - just finished installing new trailer hitch, wiring and finished build of 5x8 NT trailer. Next, I want to build the basic platform. I have both S Fredericks and Kuffel manuals but having a little trouble understanding step one. Is it sensible to build the platform right to the edge of the trailer frame? I understand that once I have that together, I should insulate, sandwich and undercoat. Then what? Do the sides come down on the outside edge of the platform? Thanks, I need a little 1,2,3 kind of jump start help as you can see. At least I have a functional trailer now which I did not, a week ago.

The floor does not have to end at the frame it can extend beyond it. It mostly depends on tire clearance and also the style of trailer you are building. My floor extends about 11 inches beyond my frame, but my trailer mostly covers my wheels.

OK that pointer by Dan was very helpful. Thanks so much, this forum is great. 2nd question then is should I determine what my side and end to end measurements are first and then use the Frederick or Kuffel approach to "fill" the space. Is this a reasonable approach?

Hi Deane - Keep in mind that some building materials like baltic birch and aluminum are available in five foot widths. Staying within the dimensions of the frame can allow you to use those products to minimize waste and costs. I am building a 5' X 8' on that same frame and I'm very happy with the way it is turning out. My finished width is exactly five feet. Others have chosen to have a full 60" inside to fit a standard queen size mattress but I decided to have a foam one custom cut. The only major change I would consider on my next build would be a foot or two more length for additional space in the galley. You are right....The people on this forum are fantastic. If you find a problem one of these innovative souls will find a solution. The most welcoming and helpful group I have every experienced. Have fun with your project.
