They are using it to press multiple layers of ply or MDF onto a curved mould - not to curve plywood round a tighter curve than it could otherwise achieve.

Much the same effect can be achieved by applying a roof panel as two 1/8" skins, glued to each other to form a 1/4" laminated roof.
