Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

I've been out and about and in true Scottish weather it's been pouring with rain at the weekends. The commonwealth games are on in Glasgow and the weather during the week has been outstanding.

On the last wet trip we ended up with water inside the TD. It took a hosepipe to recreate and find the problem. It turns out the water was flowing down the curve of the roof, reaching the galley hinge, flowing sideways and then pouring over and then lipping into the TD instead of cascading away from the body. This is the second time I've cut the hinge too short. To compound matters the roof join at the 4' sheet, split and I've added go-faster aluminium stripes. They look great and sort that leak.
ADVICE....
Before cutting the galley hinge flush with the body, do some water tests; in my experiment, about 1/2" 15mm is about right.

Maybe you could add a piece to kick the water out away from the sidewall. I saw this idea posted on here somewhere and that's what I did. Can't say if it works, I haven't had my camper uncovered in the rain. Here's what my hatch/hinge/diverter looks like:

I have built two with galley lids and have used plain jane Stanley hinges and covered with a rubber rain cover anchored with decorative aluminum strips.

No runs no drips no errors !

I left the dog ears to run long to allow run off water to drip to the ground instead of running down the side of the trailer.

While you can't see there was a 5 foot piece of 1/2" pvc placed inside to form a damn that allows the rain water to divert to the sides when the hatch is open. I have never had a drop of rain in the open galley unless it was wind driven.







This might be an answer to your problem.

I dunno if this would help, but I cut mine flush and built a little doo-whopper on each end to seal it up. Haven't had any trouble with it sitting outdoors for over 2 years.

If anyone reading this is looking at building a waterproof galley hinge, take heed, these are great designs and make using the TD in wet weather a pleasure.
