Shipping Costs

Living in a remote rural area most everything I need needs to be shipped in. I am working on the doors for my Cubby and wanted to get stainless steel hinges, so I checked with Austin Hardware, who have some neat things. They list a 72" hinge of the type I wanted at a reasonable price. But the $16.52 price was overshadowed by a $18.96 shipping charge!
I ordered the same thing from a California boat company (about the same distance from my home) where the shipping charge is only $6.95. Both quotes on shipping was for UPS ground.
Why the difference? No comment about "handling charge" who knows?

Some shippers get a discount on the rates they pay UPS.
Up to 50% with large volume.
Some pass the discount along to their customers, others don't.

I have bought many things from them and I always bitched about the cost of shipping, but after doing the math I still have a few pennies on the deal, I only wished I could have afforded only everything at the same time.

Austin Hardware got me for double shipping. One of the cab locks would not fit in the small box they sent so they sent it seperately. I was charged $10 for each package.

Hi John,
I was looking for stainless hinges as well but was put off by Austin's shipping charges. What boat company did you order through? I'd like to get mine ordered.

At least you guys don't have to pay Duty............ I've ordered parts; stuff on eBay etc. and shipping was reasonable..........until it arrived and I had to pay the value to the Canadian Gov't...
I ordered some engraved beer glasses as wedding gifts (US company, BUT had a canadian website) So imagine my suprise when they arrived (from the US) and I had to pay $35.00 in "duty" Even though the website was for Canadian Orders....No where did they say the items were shipped from the US

I think Doug is hanging around Daisy to much.
