Postby Cookie » Wed Jan 04, 2006 1:56 pm

Hello Everyone I have been reading all your posts since I joined and now I would like one of my questions answered.I have not built a trailer yet but I would like to know what thickness floor should I use if I build storage compartments in my floor. I have my plans All drawn up for a benroy and would like the extra Storage.
Thanx

heya Cookie, welcome to the board...some more info please...is the storage you envision drop thru(below floor/frame) are they built above the floor/frame, are you doing an insulated floor...good quality 1/2" ply should meet your needs in most cases...if you are talking about depth of storage boxes, something in the 6"+- range should workout OK...let us know...and where are the pics...ya know we luv da pics :D ;)

Pics will be a little prob No digital camera spending my money on wood.
Storage will be between the frame rails and cut through the floor with a depth of 6 to 8 inches with trap doors inside under the mattress. no insulated floor.

Cookie--even a dirt-cheap digital camera would be an inportant investment for you right now. If you can't post what you're doing, guys here will have a pretty hard time helping you.

If it wasn't for me posting a photo, and for Woody seeing it, I wouldn't have had any GROUND wires right now. And wouldn't THAT have been fun!?
Here we go again!

Hi Cookie!

Welcome to our little corner of the cybersphere!

Anyway, I have storage compartments like you are talking about. For strength I attached my compartments to the framework under the trailer rather than to the floor. That allowed me to have a 1/2 thick floor without worrying about strength. You can see the design on my website.

Welcome again!

Joanne

Does cybersphere actually have corners?!?

That's perfect then.

I'm always wanting to go back to this website or that, and can never remember where they were. I should use the bookmarks more but I've gotten way too many of them as it is.

Hi Cookie,

Welcome to the forum... I'll bet you've been waiting for us admins to say that!

Regarding your floor thickness, I think it depends a lot on the type of construction you use... You could probably use 3/4" and get by without furring strips in the corners... but since you probably need furring strips any way, plan on them, and then go with some nice flat wood for your construction...

1/2" baltic birch is nice and flat. If you don't want to pay the premium for 1/2" baltic birch, you could always consider the 3/4" maple plywood they sell at home depot for $29 a sheet. (I have a lot of that in my Lil Diner!)

And just for grins and giggles... here's what my dropped floor looks like...
it's built out of 3/4" maple plywood, and I didn't use any furring strips, other than the 2 reinforcing bars on the bottom... It's quite heavy though...

Yea, I know I'm late... with not being able to check email at work and all that...

But that's about to change... GM decided to let all their contract employees go, and the pink slips went out tonight...

Yea I'm a contract... yea I got a pink slip... Friday is my last day...

Going to have to tighten the belt up over here...

But at least I'll have time to answer all the posts, 24 hours a day, just like Buford said... me and my twin!!!

Well that certainly bites! My sister-in-law and her husband were here last week, they both work for GM out near Tipp City, OH. He said he wasn't sure what they were doing but it didn't look good for them either. He is in accounting I believe and she does some sort of design work on different projects, not sure exactly. We haven't heard from them since they went home Saturday so I don't know if they both still have jobs or not.

Hey Rich,

Thanks for the reply... I'm currently in shock... I hope to recover overnight... I'll talk at work tomorrow and see what I can find out...

I hope your sister in law and husband survive this. As I said, I don't know the full impact of this cut yet...

Keep me in the loop, and I'll keep you in the loop too!
