cabinet & closet interior finish

Postby Gaston » Thu Jan 05, 2006 9:08 pm

Hi All
Working on the closet that forms the front of my teardrop and I got to wondering what everyone has done to finish off the interior of their cabinets. I am painting the outside of the cabinet with catalized urethane primer (left overs from the last car project) and am going to paint the face and doors with urethane. While priming I went ahead and primed the interior also. now I am wondering what to use to finish the interior. at $125.00 a gal the paint I'm useing for the face and doors is a bit spendy for the inside. ( I'd leave it prined but the primer is a pink toned tan and would look like crap with the silver face and purple doors)

we did the interiors (of everything ) with stain and water based polyurethane and we did it all before assembly to avoid having to try and finish inside of an already built tear

Gaston on the interior of my cabinets I painted them a nice shade of Hunter Green to accent the dark wood on the doors and surrounding walls. All of the wood that I stained was red oak. The green seems to complement it.

As of now I plan on spraying the interior with a clear coat, prior to assembly, as madjack did.

schrei...it was a bit of a hassle with, all of the individual pieces being sprayed and then moved around to make room for more pieces, while the first ones set up and then swapping everything around but in the end it was well worth it not to have to try and "do" finishes inside of the tear.

p.s. during assembly we found that using gorilla glue was the best option for joining individual pieces that already had urethane on them...FYI all finished pieces were stained and or sprayed with water based urethane...the floor and exterior of the front box were all done with MinWax ClearSheild, an old fashioned, heavy bodied, outdoor rated urethane

I agree on the prefinishing and them mount them inside. I'm planning on constructing panel cabinet doors, using 1/4" plywood in oak or spruce frames. I haven't decided if my plywood will be leftover oak plywood from the sides that I bought on sale, or if I will use some of the light oak paneling that I plan to put on the walls. The paneling won't need any finishing, but the frames will. I'll probably use Minwax Polyshades in honey oak (sprayed). Whatever I use, they will be all finished when I put them in the TTT.

Painter's tape over the areas that will need to be glued!

...started out thataway but we are just too lazy...it was turning into a major chore just to do the taping...a test bond with the Gorilla Glue turned out to be way more than adequate...

That's a good tip. I wondered how well TBIII would glue my top to the sides when the edges of both would have been coated with a couple of coats of poly varnish to seal them.
