Roll Top Galley enclosure under Galley hatch

Hi All,

My build is moving along.

I've decided to build in a roll top enclosure (like a roll top desk) in the galley to give it a clean look when not in use.

This wasn't too hard to fabricate once I got in the slider and side bolsters built in'.

The purchased parts I used.

That will be nice when done.
Just an FYI, you could have bought a half round router bit and made the tambours out of solid wood vs the MDF core.
Just take a wide board, route the edge and rip the strip on the table saw, then repeat the process again & again until you produce enough stock & glue it all to canvas.
You'd need to make sub ends to route the groove on each side for the tambour to slide in.
It's fun making your own tambours, the 2 desks I made with tambours in 1984 still work like new.

Hi Danny,

Thanks, I thought about doing it that way but since this was my first TD and I'm not much of a cabinet maker or wood worker (yet), I thought I'd stick with the purchase parts.

Thanks for the input.

My concern is how well will MDF (basically a loaf of sawdust glued together) hold up to an outdoor environment.
The half round tambours are a lot stiffer than beveled flat stock, especially with such a wide roll top.
The antique roll tops had wire between the tambour slats but canvas is very flexible and holds up great.
Good luck with your build.

Thanks,

The tambour roll top won't be exposed to the elements. I have the typical galley hatch that will be skinned like the rest of the trailer that will close it all in. The Tambour will only be exposed when the galley hatch is open and in use. I'll post more pictures as I get it further along.

Seal it real good as we have encountered rain while camping.
The ambient air is full of moisture (outdoor environment) and wind can and will blow into the galley area even with a canopy over it.
Wood and wood products pick up moisture when your not looking, even in an enclosed garage.
