Started the floor frame

Postby sunny16 » Mon Feb 06, 2006 12:18 pm

THanks for the help in picture posting. I hope this works!
THe weather was warmer this past weekend so I got the itch to start building on my trailer. I bought some Baltic birch plywood and some 2x4's and worked all day Saturday. I used 2x4's for the frame, lapped the joints and glued and screwed them. I used 1/8" ply for the bottom and 1/2" ply for the top floor layer. I wanted to have some storage space so I copied an idea I saw here on this forum and built two boxes and recessed them into the floor frame. I used 1x8"s which didn't hang down too low. Still gives me the clearance underneath. And it won't look too bad either. I still need to paint the bottom with roof tar/sealer and fill the the floor with insulation. I will build the removable panels at a later date and I don't know whether to hinge them or leave them lift-out. But I was excited to at least get SOMETHING done on it, the trailer. Thanks for all the good ideas on this forum. An here are the pic for all to enjoy!

Very Nice!
Do you have some scrap ply??
If so, I would replace the 1 by 8's with ply..Just in case you whack the lumber with a rock, it might split?? Not so with ply!!
Maybe I'm just nuts!! :?

Nice job on the frame also!!

I thought about that but I don't have a table saw to get the straight cut at this time. In the future that may change, so I used the next best thing I could find. And if my van, which will pull the trailer hits anything first, I'm in big trouble anyway. There is plenty of clearance. The boxes are higher than the axel. But good thing to think about. Thanks.

You have a nice project started, and I love your storage built in
in the floor......gives it a nice look, I love to see saw dust on the
floor. . . . . :applause: :applause:

Sunny16,
Nice looking frame. Is that Sunny16 as in the Sunny 16 rule in photography?

s4son,

Yes that's where I got it from. Another hobby of mine is photography and that just seemed like a good name. I liked "f/stop" but on another forum someone had used it so I used sunny16. You are the first one who knows that!

Sunny,

Nice job on the dropped floor. Well, everything actually. I'm looking at that rib running down the middle... I know you had to go around a steel member..
I ran into the same situation with Lil Diner #1. Steve has since improved that situation with Lil Diners 2, 3, & 4... possibly more... Steve, do you have a photo of your frame with the dropped floor in it?

Keep up the good work Sunny...

Mike...

So am I the only teardrop builder (in theory at least, so far I guess I'm really a teardrop planner) in Utah that didn't do a darn thing over the weekend? Between you and Spadinator, you're making me look downright lazy!

If you can't tell, I'm jealous! It's looking good! I made it down to MacBeath's over lunch to check out their Baltic birch. It's like plywood heaven down there. Is that where you got yours?

jmtk,

Good to see another Utahn on the forum. I am in the Salt Lake valley so I got my plywood from Intermountain Wood Products in Salt Lake. Where is the place you went too? And where are you located?

And mikeschn,

I thought it was you who posted a dropped floor/storage before here. I liked the idea. And I thought about one big removable panel but two would be easier to get to if you are in the trailer. You can sit on one side or the other and open them up. So, whatever works for you. And yes, there is a metal frame member that cut thru right there, the tongue.

Thanks to all for the comments.
