2+2?

Hi all! :D
Been lurking here for a bit, think I've caught the bug....
I really like the 2+2 design, I guess a modernistic/cub long, right? The top hatch/moonroof is da' bomb.
The 4' height seems a bit too conservative with the upper bunk in there, but I do enjoy low profile, so I'm thinking of maybe just another 6" up.
Who has built one of these, or somthing like? I'd love to see some pics of the cabin. Also wondering how heavy one of these things would weigh - if built with light weight in mind.
The KampMaster, with it's step-in galley, has some definite design pro's; wondering how much of that could be built into something like the 2+2 w/o increasing length, like maybe even 12" "floor" and a fold-down step-up.
The other thing I'd like to see would be an extending front cabinet area, just as far forward as the floor is taken up, so that with it extendeed, you get the full forward floor for the bed (or at least almost all.) In place of a tongue box.
Trying to get a CAD program to work so i can show what I mean. Might take a while.
Anyway, thanks for the site! It's quite a time vaccuum!

Welcome to the board Taylor...the home of TimeVacumingR Us...we do alot of that along with building an occasional trailer...watchout for that bug, it becomes addictive and the only cure is to build and keep on building with a little camping thrown in between builds...ther have been a couple of 2+2s built...checkout Kens 2+2 build in the Hall of Fame at the top left of this page...just remember we luv da pics, any pics, so post afew and we are waiting what ya cadup with

Saw Ken's. Looks like he dispensed with the "+2" part and just made a long cub. Very nice, I might add.
More I look, the more I like the 5' high version, though I think I can do without the extra width. Throw a window in the front and do the split-door at the tail and it's a winner!
CAD doesn't like me, so maybe I'll start with cardboard....
Anyone here like pics?

KH...your doin' great ;) ...a couple of thoughts...when we first started building it was a 4X8(and it still is) but I kept thinking about...how about this and how about that, what if I added this and where could I put that...by the time I was done I had a plan for #2 the was 12'long 5'tall and 5'wide...witha drop floor for a dinette and a portapotti inna front cabinet...I hadda fully selfcontained unit that would carry/store all my gear and leave absolutely nothing in the car but me n the wife(aka the poor girl). As I gained from the experience of building the first one I realized I was planning to build what I really hated...an RV...so while it may get built one day, #2 is gonna be a 5X8(9) which is everything I needed/wanted in the first place...add a privy tent and a screenroom on the back and I have just what I was after...a place to sleep off the ground and a ready togo kitchen...everything else might be wanted but it definitely ain't needed...just a buck2.98 worth of thoughts on the matter

I hear you MJ. Despite how it sounds, I'm not really looking for a mini-RV. No potty or that sort of thing, I guess more of a hard tent with a galley. Not far from the original idea, just that I have two kids and plan to continue having them for a good long while. ;)
So, maybe propane stove, but the tv, microwave (?!), AC fridge (although there is the beer thing...) etc., can stay at home. In fact, it seems that most of the galleys are a bit more space than one would normally need going camping for a few days. When I go car camping, I usually have a pretty modest mess hall, and do just fine.
Yes, 12x6x4 is pretty big for a T³, and I was actually thinking about going up to 5' high. I hope to figure a way to trim that down. The front cabinet area looks like it could lose about 10" without cutting into the sleep floor, and I'm thinking 8" off the rear would still allow ample space for the stove, cooler, a few pots and pans, dishes... that would make 10.5' long, and maybe a 4.5' height would work ok. Will start cutting cardboard this w/e.
I'm thinking it wouldn't be too hard to put a little fold-down table, say 36"x20" on the port (street-side) wall, door to starboard. A drop in the floor and you have a place to sit in the rain and have some tea.

...It's all in what suits your needs...we have no kids, so no room is needed for them. However, even in the smaller 5X8(9) I will still want a footwell and table setup for a little dinette so the wife and I can play cards, read, watch a movie in the rain and away from the mosquitoes...

I like the 2+2 but I didn't like the profile on the 2+2H.

As a result of my persistent whining, Andrew played around with the Cabin Car profile and came up with a design for 3 (similar to the 2+2 in concept but the extra bunk transverse at the front) and an a possible w/c between the wheels.

This w/c could swapped for transverse bunk beds (insteads of the front transverse bed) or certainly for a transverse single bed... I think inside hieght is more than 5'3 feet at the highest point (my wife's hieght) and length is a littel more than 13. I think if you were doing bunk beds and not worrying about the wife being able to stand you could be maybe as much as two feet or so shorter in length and corresponding proportional amount shorter in height and not lose any functionality.

I can email you the pdfs Andrew put together on it. The "Big Cabin Car" is not on his website yet.

Taylor, I am planning to get started on a 2+2H just as soon as the d@#$ed IRS sends me my money back. Right now I am trying to decide whether the build my chassis from scratch, or modify some sort an existing trailer for the purpose.

I am planning to stretch the 2+2H by 9-12 inches. This is ao accomodate a second transverse bunk at the front of the trailer. We have never needed a hanging locker when camping and that would be mostly wasted space for us, so I figured out how I could use better. Other than that, I intend to build pretty much to plan. I also want to put a tongue box up front with a profile that complements the modernistic/cub profile. But like madjack says, build what suits you.
