Can anyone offer some tips for DIY compartment doors? What types of trims and seals, minimum corner radius, or squared-off corners, etc?
I would like an 8" x 10" door for my tongue storage box, but I can't seem to find a pre-manufactured door smaller than 9" x 12".

¿ have you checked the marine industry for waterproof deck hatches ?

the come in rectangular(hinged) and round(screw in)

I assume you are asking about the trim.

It's a matter of finding the right dead-soft trim. But if it's not soft, you can take the stiffness out with a torch.

So-Cal sells some 1/2" "nosing" trim that may work. You would want to cut a mock-up first to ensure the rim will make the curve.

I may have bought that trim from Vintage. :thinking:

SW, The marine hatches I've seen look a little too flimsy to me...surface-mounted without flanges or key locks.

Tony, If I can easily bend that trim to a 3" radius, I will be happy. I was thinking it would look something like this with a trim-lok seal.

I don't know how you'd take that aluminum angle (?) doorstop all the way around.

Here's my door mockup I did with a wooden doorstop:

The finished stop looks good. I used Trim-lock's 7/16" bulb with a 3/8" gap in the stop.

Tony,
I thought that my cargo doors could be a little less "fancy" than the cabin doors, but the detail is starting to look about the same.
A wood doorstop will certainly be easier for me to build, I was concerned about water intrusion. Didn't you fiberglass all of your edges? Would epoxy alone be enough to seal the wood edges?
(I know, time to buy a copy of Frederick's manual. :roll:

I fiberglassed the edges of the galley walls. Probably because it was just a simple thing to do --cut a strip of glass and wet it out. The edges of the doors and hatch are sealed with epoxy and I'm fine with that.

I sealed the bottom of my floor with epoxy. When it came time to drill holes down through it for the heater tubes, the bottom surface didn't act like wood for the last .020 or so. Epoxy really glues the fibers together.

I guess I can thank the spammer for resurrecting this post!

But to follow up, I ended up buying the smallest pre-fab door I could find: a 9"x12" from RecPro. I had to widen the previously cut hole by about 1 inch all around. It fits really tight to the floor and ceiling of the compartment, but it'll do.
