Help with headboard design

My son and I are well into his foamie Benroy build and I'm hoping to start the headboard soon. He wants some thing simple; a shelf for a book or two and USBs for reading light and phone charging. He doesn't want cabinet doors but may be ok with a cup holder on each side. I know I could just install a simple shelf but want a little more challenge than that.

I searched the forum for photos of simple headboard and really haven't found much. I also searched Google images with little luck.

Can you post some photos of your simple headboard shelf?

This is how I do it. Open storage above with a 3-1/2" lip and storage below behind the sliders.

I really like the shelf above Tony’s headboard. That would be great to put glasses and books and phones.

Mine incorporates a raceway for hidden wiring, with switched 12 volt DC outlets, 120 VAC outlets, and some reading lights.

This is what we did, open headboard is curved to match the profile of the roof/front of the cabin. Reading lights, USB charging ports, the chrome "square" is folding type drink holder.

The reason you don’t see any doors In that photo is that it’s behind the camera. It’s a hybrid of a cargo hauler and a square teardrop, built on a military trailer chassis. The bed platform can be folded up into side benches when I want to use it for hauling.

The shelves in my weekender are about as simple as it gets. The bottom shelf is actually two removable pieces with thumb holes for access to DC wiring system. They are all easily removable with pocket screw connections. They are also wide enough to hold small duffel bags and other luggage during travel.

This is the headboard we have. The bottom panel (up against the mattress) is removable, it hides all of my AC and DC power distribution. In the center is a power pod which has USB, main circuit shutoffs, AC power. The shelves in the center have bungee net keeping things in place. Two large cabinet doors hides a pretty narrow storage area. We like the power pod and the shelves with the bungee net. The cabinets are kinda useless, they are too narrow to put much in them and everything falls over. The doors are hard to open when in bed. It looks good in my opinion, just not the ultimate in practicality.

It's not done yet, but here is mine. The LED reading lights (mounting plates shown) have built-in USB ports. The storage cabinet will be for linens I think.

That is very nice. Where do you find bungee nets like this?

We find we do a lot of sitting in our tear, so I sloped the headboard back at 15 degrees. It's very comfy with our pillows propped against it. The headboard tips out so we can stuff things behind it; we keep spare bedding, electric heater, and other stuff in there. Above the headboard I put a couple open shelves and the battery monitor, AC and DC outlets. The shelves hold books, pills and shoes in camp, on the road we unload them (or the road does it for us).

One other thing to note. If you look at the picture I posted, the lights are not in the best place for reading. instead of the side wall I should have put them in the center above the power pod. Where they are now, the book is always in a shadow unless you roll to the side to read.
