Gluing Memory Foam To Mattress

Postby halfdome, Danny » Thu Dec 16, 2021 7:20 pm

I'm in the process of attaching 2" memory foam to two new 4" x 58 3/8" x 40 "mattress pads.
I have the spray glue, but I'm somewhat hesitant to spray both pieces and try to accurately bond the two together by myself.
It seems like it would involve 4 people which is not possible with covid.
My wife can't help because she's in a shoulder sling.

My question is, has anyone sprayed just one surface to avoid a complete disaster?
I'm thinking I might be able to scoochy it in the correct position with wet glue and let it cure in my heated shop.
The memory foam is a little oversized so there is some wiggle room.
I've thought of just not gluing but I think the top layer would bunch up over time.
I tried using 3/8 x 36" dowels to keep them seperate to position correctly like I do with Plam but the 2" Memory foam sags.
They will fit in our zippered on 3 edges covers which were made for 1" less in thickness.
Any experience or suggestions would be appreciated.
:D Danny

No experience whatsoever, so you know my advice is worth what you're paying for it!

How about building a frame out of scrap ply that would just fit around the edges of the mattress, but slightly taller than the mattress when the pieces are bonded? Fit one piece into it, and drop the other piece on top, so the box guides them together true.

That’s a good idea but I’d need another set of hands so it doesn’t sag in the middle and attach in the wrong spot.
You do have me thinking of a plywood piece, of the correct size, to hold it flat like a pizza pan or server.
I have a 4x8 sheet of cardboard with wood substrate that might work.
Thanks for your thought provoking idea.
Edit: I just thought I might lay the memory foam on the mattress in the correct position then fold over half , spray the glue on the exposed foam then laying it down to adhere.
Then I could do the other side.
I’ll practice that before I go ahead.

Well... it worked.
To glue the two pieces together I lined up the two, then folded over half of the memory foam topper, sprayed the glue then rolled them together.
Used a spray shield when I sprayed the second half to keep glue off the top of the foam.
There was enough wiggle room to make some corrections.
I'll let it cure overnight then do the other half tomorrow.

Funny, I actually didn't think of the way you did it, or think about the fact that I did do something very similar once to line up a large map that I was framing with a backer board. I put down two sided carpet tape on the backer board, lined up one side of the map and held it with spring clamps, then pulled the backing on the tape one strip at a time while rolling the map down with a wall-paper roller. Finished one side, then pulled off the clamps and did the other. Worked great too.

Glad your method worked! Not sure how I inspired anything, but happy to help!

this method is one the fancy automotive interior builders use when working w/ pieces of rare n EXPENSIVE leather

get everything lay'd out on a cheap surface covering to protect the floor from over spray and weight the off end down w/ bar bells or a piece of furniture ... so the parts wont ooch out of place while you glue the first 1/2

Task completed, the new mattress is in the teardrop.
I'm not too fond of trimming the foam with the electric carving knife, it's difficult when trimming 1/4" or less and hard to keep a square cut.
I made a full sized cardboard template out of the sheet I mentioned before to make sure it was square and trimmed in all the correct spots.
It made a great guide, especially with a permanent marking pen.

Danny,
Congrats on the glue-up. Would you mind saying where you bought your foam?
Take care, Tom

Tom, I ended up getting the foam from the Foam Factory.
They were great compared to Florida Foam who I had bought 3 mattress from before.
They asked me if I wanted to cancel my order because of supply issues.
They also wanted a horrible price for the memory foam.
They didn't see my email response so I ended up with another 2 piece mattress without the memory foam.
It was cut under sized so at least I got a $70 refund.
Like several other people have said the Foam Factory is the best place to get one.
