Is Sealing Necessary when using VHB Tape

Postby Capebuild » Mon Jun 13, 2022 12:13 pm

When I skinned my trailer with aluminum there were sheets that overlapped other sheets (the overlaps being about 2 inches). In place of using fasteners of some variety I used VHB to adhere the overlaps. My question: Is it a good idea (is it necessary) to run a bead of Proflex or other sealant over the seams (to kind of seal the VHB tape)? I'm just wondering whether the VHB tape might wick any water up into the seams.......... Interested in what others have done......

Thanks

If you have some voids at the edge I wouldn't hurt to prevent any standing water from getting in there. especially where you are, I hear you get ice and snow every now and then. If you goet good squeeze out along the entire seam I'd say you're fine.
But you need to make sure the two products are compatible, I've had to fix this oversight a few times. I've seen one sealant system literally melt another and run down the wall of the building.
I'll be done when I'm finished, if that's not fast enough, take a number.

I think of Tom's method on "The Silver Beatle" is the defacto method for installing lapped aluminum skin. Well documented and seemingly bullet proof.

John, I never leave something to chance so to speak.
The VHB tape I use on my overlapping seams has a foam look and feel to it, I seal and apply a thin one leg piece of aluminum trim.

Almost 11 years after it was installed, I had some 3M VHB tape let loose on me. Yes, add some sealing material.

If the tape has some thickness, and can be positioned inside/offset from the edge a bit, say 1/4"

then a thin bead of sealant can be swiped along the join without actually touching any tape.
