Okay, I did a little search but didn't find my answer ... forgive me if this sounds anal....

But when you get an 8' wide trailer, does it actually measure 8 feet from the outside of one side to the other? And when we talk about a queen size bed on the interior , are we talking about a camping/blow up queen size or a true mattress queen size?

I am not attempting to answer that one, because I just don't know that much about commercially built trailers.

My frame is 59 1/2" (had to narrow it a half inch for proper swingarm clearance). After adding framing and paneling, the interior width should 57 3/4". That's close enough to queen for me. I'll have custom cushions made, probably about 57" wide (ok, so it's a cross between full and queen). Most queen toppers are undersized anyway. A queen from Overstock is 58" wide by 77" long, which would fit my needs. I'll just have my bed cushions total 77" long.

I just measured mine in the house. Queen size is 60"x80". I always thought camping blowup mattresses were the same. I will be watching this to see if that is so. I also get the impression that most or some keep the mattress narrow to make it easier to make the bed. Also, and maybe this is for another thread, but what about blowup mattresses, are they used a lot or is there a reason not too.

The interior dimension of my tear is 60 1/8 X 80. The extra 1/8 happened because the 5X5 birch plywood was that size. I never cut the interior panels so that I knew that they would be the same width.

Hi I had that question in my mind too as I was building my T T. As it turned out the dimensions of the Zephyr are as follows:

Overall Dimensions: 67” Wide, 12’ Long, 6’ High

Max. Height for ourside clearance at Roof Vent: 6’4”

Interior Cabin Dimensions: Deck 54 ¾” x 76”; Cabin Height 48”

My bunk is a little short to be a true queen size. But it is very close. and the bunk is roomy for two. I am glad I went wider than 48" It would have been too close for peace and happiness.

My HF trailer is just a skooch over 4'x8' on the deck a sheet of ply fit perfectly.

I built mine to fit this 60"X79" queen size mattress.

Julie, Mine is 60" wide on the outside and with insulated 1 3/4" walls it is a little smaller than a queen. I tried the queen blow up mattress and it lays there with a good size crown. I too will have custom cushions made since I only wanted to make one seam in the floor with two 60" x 60" Baltic Birch sheets.

I'm building my trailer to fit a queen sized futon. 60" x 80" Interior skin is nice, since its 60" baltic birch. Outside skin is going to be cut out of 4' x 8' plywood sheets. Kind of a waste, but I wanted the full 60" width interior.

Thanks for all the input !! I haven't been able to start on even my floor yet, because of trailer troubles, and thought when I told the guy to make a 5' wide trailer that he would actually make the trailer a full 60" wide. I guess a couple of inches doesn't make a big difference then a couple inches or three from the walls, .... well, I just wondered.

Yes, it's still a little more room than a 4' / full size mattress.

Julie, my chassis is 3 1/2" narrower than the 60" trailer so I could have my walls hide the chassis, just another way of doing it. Danny

Hi again Julie,

If you are thinking about using a "real" mattress rather than sectional foam or an air mattress, you have to think of how you will get the mattress into the trailer after it's finished. It won't fit through the door! I've even heard of people installing the mattress before they close up their cabin.

I've build the lower section of the bulkhead between the cabin and the galley so it will be removeable. I will have to disassemble some of the lower cabinets, but I won't have to cut anything.

Just one of those "Don't paint yourself into a corner" things.

commercial trucks and trailers are measured on the outside. Mine is 60" wide inside. Queen size.

Julie, the blow up air mattresses come in different "inch" sizes depending on who's mattress you buy. I measured my mattress I sleep on at home and then built my TTT around it so my "5 foot wide" trailer is only 57". I thought about using a blow up mattress because I already had one but decided against it because it's just something else to pop, cut, fool with, yadda, yadda. A blow up is a HORRIBLE insulated sleeping pad. The air doesn't keep warm or hold the cold at bay like a mattress does. Pick a mattress and build around it.

Oh, BTW, my mattress is a full, not a queen.

Yeah, Jeff...I had measure this two part foam couch pad thing that my neighbor had given us out of their motor home. It's comfy, and connected long ways down the center for folding into a couch in their motorhome. It will be perfect for the td and so I measure it and it's about 60" , and my queen mattress in the bedroom is about 58" so I thought the person building it would know what 5' wide for a trailer meant! 5 ft = 60".

Well, a few inches shouldn't make a big difference. I'm glad I"m going with something more than 46-47" ...

The trailer should be fixed/done tomorrow... then the floor and sides hopefully next weekend.
