Hi All

I am sure the answer is somewhere in the forums, but I have been searching and have not found it yet. Can anyone tell me the weight of a generic Benroy. I have a Honda Element with a towing capacity of 1500lbs...can the benroy be towed by this vehicle.

Thanks

Pierre,

First, welcome to the forum. You've come to the right place if you are interested in building a teardrop.

To answer your question, it shouldn't be a problem. If you go by the plans, your trailer should be significantly less than 1500 pounds. My trailer is sort of styled like a Benroy, is 5' X 9", and built on the heavy side, and is about 1250 pounds. Pictures of the construction methods are in my gallery.

Again, welcome to the forum and madness! :?

The estimated weight of my Generic Benroy is less that 700 lbs. I built light but I am also not finished yet.

Hi Pierre,

Welcome to the forum....

We need someone to build the Generic Benroy so we know the exact weight. But to put it in the ballpark, my first Benroy was 4x8 and weighed 840#. My second benroy was 5x10 and weighed 1540#. You should be somewhere between those two numbers...

Seriously though, I think you'll be near the 1000# mark...

My tear is a Benroy style at 1300 lbs. Does one put brakes on one that heavey? My tow vehicle is a 97 GMC Jimmy, V-6.

SteveH,

Nice gallery. What is your tongue weight and how many inches from the back?

Thanks Elmer

Elmo,

The tongue weight is up there since I loaded the tongue box with all the junk I can fit in there...about 175 pounds, but my Dodge truck doesn't care. The axle is 39" from the rear, the body is 9' long, and 5' wide.

Your close in most places (1500lb limit) for a trailer with no brakes. Add in 200lbs of food/ice and assorted gear and you're over.

In light of the borderline weights, it sounds like trailer brakes are in order... that's a nice accessory by the way!!!
