What are those X type hinge things on the sides of pop-up/pop-top campers. You know like the kind used on the original Compact that Andrew modeled his after?

If anyone knows what I am talking about and where I can buy them, please let me know.

I reckon these were probably custom made for the Compact.

One thing to notice is that (I think) later Compacts had the scissor lift on the inside of the canvas. This seems like a good idea as then you can adjust it, lubricate it, play with it, etc, easily. However it does mean that you can't simply pull the 'canvas' in as you let the roof down.

There was one at the Spamboree that had the mechanism on the inside. Not a scissor lift though. You can kind of see them in the picture below.

A potential problem I saw with this was that you could accidentally get grease on yourself or the inside of the canvas.

I'm pretty sure Nick's pictures show a later Compact roof, which has independent front and back lifting, not a parallel lift. I think the instructions (search the FiberglassRV forum for these) were fairly adamant that you had to raise the back of the roof first and then the front, and the reverse when lowering.

They are sometimes referred to as "canopy lifters", and you can find them through the following sites:

http://www.camec.com.au/53-Hardware%20Pop%20Tops.htm

Not real cheap, but I started looking into them when I saw Andrew's version of the Compact.
