Adding trailer brakes

Postby josephhanson » Mon May 15, 2006 11:12 am

I've been reading past posts about trailer brakes, and have decided to add brakes to my trailer. Can anybody tell me, will adding brakes make my wheels extend farther out? Also, I would like to install electric brakes, is there a good place to look for detailed instructions. I have no idea what is needed for the trailer or for the car.
Thanks in advance,
Joe Hanson

The Dexter Axle web page has a lot of information in their Trailer Resource Library section.

Shouldn't change anything at all. You just remove the idler hubs, install the backing plates and brakes then put the drum on. It takes the place of the idler hub, you should still have the same hub face measurement when you are done.

Joe, Like Paul said, check out Dexteraxle.com any of the utility trailer parts sites. If you want to see the parts up close, come up to Carmel and visit Northside Trailer. They have all the parts in stock. Im not sure I would buy from them (the are pricey) but you could at least see what you are getting into. And if the timing is right, you could help me put the sides on the Hoosier MegaTear.

Seriously, its not a big deal, just kinda expensive.

Hey guys, maybe he should first check to see if he has the square plate on his axle to bolt the backing plate to first. If the axle wasn't made for brakes, he'll have to get them welded on first, so it might not be a simple retofit......

John, I checked, I don't have the square backing plate. I'll check and see if there is a bolt on plate.

Joe, that plate has to be welded on. It is what takes all the stress when the trailer brakes are applied. I have heard that it takes a very competent welder to weld those on because of the load they carry. Once you get those on, everything else we have said applies.
