Sketchup tip: door clearance

Postby dglenn1960 » Mon May 15, 2006 3:18 pm

I've been following the door hinge and clearance threads and thought I should point out a tip for Sketchup. Once you have your door/opening/etc. modeled you can use 'rotate' to try out the door and clearances. Here's how:

- Be sure to 'group' all the parts of your door. This will let you rotate it as a whole.
- Pick your rotation axis and the point about which it will rotate:

- Align the bottom of the rotation protractor (the front of the door in this case).

- Move your mouse to rotate.

- You can use your middle mouse wheel (click down and drag) to move about the model during the rotation. This way you can see other parts of the model. In this case we move over to the door edge to see the effect of opening the door.

Now you can tell if you are leaving enough clearance to open/swing the door.

 Thanks
great info and pictures Dave, it won't help those of us who are unable to get the tech on our computers or the tech challanged.

It does make a fantastic example of what we need and how to put it there.

Good job

Dave, awesome drawings.
They look great, and I'm sure it will work, but I'm more interested in the motorcycle, is that a Road Star?
I ride a 1999 Road Star Silverado. Love it.

Yes, 2005 midnite silverado. Put 10k on it last year and am very happy with it. Though it can keep you busy buying shiny farkles to hang on it...
