I got to thinking about where to get canvas-fabric store-and if exterior paint would work as an adhesive for the fabric to adhere to the wood? I'm not to fond of using epoxy resin because the cost is rather prohibative at this point, and I'm spending most of my money on flying.

If paint wouldn't work, are there any other options to adhereing canvas to wood?

Also, I'd like to keep the texture of the fabric. IOW, not having a smooth finish.

Canvas theoretically could be used on all sides and top (aircraft style ) canvas over a superlight frame .... Finish was usually aircraft lacquer, available at small airports ...

I've done the epoxy, and it turns out really good. I know what you mean about leaving the texture of the cloth and not filling it up with paint. I had a classic reproduction sailboat at one time and used a coarse weave fiberglass on the deck to simulate canvas, just didn't fill it up with resin or paint. I used a linear polyurethane paint on that project. Really easy to do your own research on this. Do a test sample before you jump in. I made one last weekend with a piece of canvas on a wood frame, the epoxy stuck it to the frame well and sealed the cloth. I painted it with white house paint. Why not use contact cement to hold the canvas onto the wood, then paint? Might be the most inexpensive way. If you need canvas in widths not available in the fabric store. Here is a source. BEFORE you put it on your frame, spread your canvas out in the floor of a DIY carwash bay and wash, then rinse, then spot-free rinse it. Now dry it in the sun on a (heavy duty!!) clothesline.

NOW get yourself a hand-pump pressure sprayer from eg lowe's or HD, and coat both sides of the canvas with Thompson's Water Seal. Let dry and recoat.
