Well, we had a productive weekend, my wife and I got the walls raised and the spars installed!

:)

Here's some front views of our tear:

LOOKS COOL!

But just one observation:

How high did you make the bottom edge of the door? That looks REALLY high, where it would annoy the crap out of you entering and exiting, scarping the undersides of your thighs.

The "rule" is one-half your mattress thickness, and since that ledge looks so high, I'm having a hard time visualizing your end-game there.

Also, judging by the position of the wheel [edited], does it clear the door, or kind of block it?

Not being critical! Just trying to be helpful and asking!

Hi Mitchell,

Very inovative construction, like to see new stuff. I am with Ira on the "wheel / door location, and door height." Is it just the camera angle or is that axle in its original location? Thanks for the pictures, but you gotta know, we love to get into everbody elses business. One thing we love almost as much as pics are good outcomes, that's why we ask.

Thanks for all the input!

As for your questions Ira and Steve, the lip on the door is 6", which is a little high, but I can get in and out of it easy enough. I think the problem with the door happened because I believe the plans we used call for having the walls sit against the side of the trailer, and we decided to rest them on top, and had already cut out the door at that point. I still think it'll work fine, but your right, it could be a little annoying.

As far as the door/wheel locations, I read your post and then looked at the picture, and it does look like the door won't clear the wheel, and I'll admit, I was a little worried.

So I ran out and threw the door up and checked it out, it opens just fine. I think it's just a weird camera angle.

Steve, as far as the axle goes, it's also just an odd angle; the axle is in its original position.

Thanks again for the observations!

Mitch, the door clears with a fender on?

Also, I would really, REALLY consider cutting that ledge down a lot. Getting in and out of it now isn't the same as when you have a mattress in there and you have to leave to pee in the middle of the night.

2 inches high--like the size of the thing I hold onto when I have to pee in the middle of the night.

You also want to be able to sit in the door opening to accept your compliments from passers-by.

I agree with Ira, imagine trying to get out of the trailer in a half waken state where you really have to go to the bathroom. You will try to do it in a hurry but in your semi-asleep state, you are likely to bang or scrape yourself on the door.

Mitchell,

Great job...nice and clean.

Is that a HF trailer? 4x8 or 5X8?

Good point, but thank God, at 49, I don't either.

My bladder is made of iron--all of those Budweisers, you know.

Mitchell,
Looks good, but I have one bit of wisdom to impart..those 1x2 pine cross members you got there are gonna want to bow out when you apply the skin to it.
If it's possible, i'd get some 1x2 poplar or some oak and replace the pine.
It was my downfall on the first trailer I built.
