Door trim idea. Need guidance.

First here's a rough image of what I'm thinking.
Image
Top Left is the door cutout.
Top Right is the door trim ring.
In the middle is a cross section view from the top of the hinge area.. The black being the door trim, red is a spacer block for the hinge and orange being the door and sidewall. Silver is the hinge.
The bottom is a head on view of just the hinge area.

What I'm thinking is to make 2 of the trim rings for each door. One mounted on the inside of the cabin and one mounted on the outside of the door. That would give me 2 layers of weatherstripping and trim out the doors.

My doors and sidewalls are 3/4" and I'm using the 4 hole Torpedo Hinges from Austin Hardware. I have about 1/4" clearance between the doors and side walls. The inside ring shouldn't be any trouble but the outside one will need to be offset so that the overlap has clearance, at least that's what I'm thinking.

Now what I need is help figuring out how thick to make the trim rings and spacer plus how much overlap I can get away with on the outside ring to still have enough clearance to allow the door to open.

Any help on this would be great but I will fall back on trial and error if needed. My gazenta and cypherin skills are pretty rusty.

Thanks.

I can see how the outside trim ring can overlap the door on the hinge side,
but I don't think you can have any overlap on the top, bottom, or lock side.
I did something simular but I made the inner trin ring overlap the door.
I put the weather striping on the inner trim ring.
The whole thing is much like a refrigerator door.

I don't have any detail pictures (could take some if you like) but you can see an overall view at http://roadkillcafe.us/

You have a beautiful tear. If you get a chance some photos would be great.

Thanks

Victor,

That's the same way Steve Frederick shows to seal doors in his construction manual.

I used the same hinges and really like them. Picts in my album.

Should work though you might need to chamfer the hinge side of the trim and the latch side of the door for clearance. If you can find an offset hinge you could avoid the spacer block. Alternately rather than a square block do something like a teardrop cab light out of wood.

Thanks all. I really like the torpedo hinges so I'm going to keep them. I will come up with something so it looks like it was planned and looks finished, the blocks would look cheesy.

Same Idea I had.

Victor,

Your plan looks good to me. It's basically the same idea I have for my trailer. I'm glad you made your post. It's really helpful for me.
