"View New Posts" Reset time

Postby TimC » Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:01 pm

Can someone tell me if there is a programmed time for "View New Posts" to reset to zero?

Some days I will post something and if I look a little bit later for a response it won't show in new posts. I can get to it in my posts, but, when it drops off the new posts list I rarely get a reply.

Just wondering. Not the end of the world.

When you say "... a response it won't show in new posts...", do you mean your post? If so, if you hit submit, its posted and you've seen it. Its no longer new. I guess new resets instantly?

That help?

Qbill, I'm not sure I know what you mean.

For example I'll post a question. An hour or two later I go to the forum and hit "View New Posts". There might be one or two new posts but mine isn't one of them.

If I then click on "View Your Posts" my post shows as the last one I submitted. My post has dropped off the new post list along with many other "new" posts. I'm assuming no-one will see it because it is not new? I know how to find my posts. That isn't the issue.

I'm just asking about when the new posts list is reset to zero (no posts). Seems at least once a day the new posts resets or purges all posts and starts showing only posts from a certain point forward. I'm wondering how often that happens and what time of day it happens.

This isn't a big deal. I just want to know when the list is emptied out. If I post a few minutes before the purge do members ever see my post/question?

I have noticed a similar thing in the "active topics" list. At times there is absolutely nothing in that list even though I know that I have responded recently to a few threads. What constitutes "active" exactly...?

I don't feel quite as confused now that someone has noticed a similar pattern. There may be a good reason for the "View New Posts" filtered results to be populated as it is. I'm not a forum developer and don't know about such things. If "new" means today's posts it might be good to retitle the filter. If "Active" means active in the last day what is different from new?

I just clicked on Active Posts and there are three "Active" threads. When I click on "New" posts those three threads are not on the list and eleven other threads are shown. Huh?

Still my favorite forum ever. Not a biggie. Just confused a bit on how to post and have folks actually see my question later.

Something else that I have always been curious about, maybe I'll ask elsewhere if you two don't know... it doesn't appear to be explained anywhere I have looked so far.

What is the meaning behind the symbols next to each thread in the discussion lists? Next to each thread title is a red or blue circle including what appears to represent lines of text. Sometimes the lines are scrolling, other times they are still.

Maybe I misunderstood, but does your post not show at all, above the "new" responses to it?

All I was trying to say us once you post and submit, its no longer a new post for you. Perhaps it should be called "unseen" posts. All I'm saying is your own posts will never by themselves be considered new for you and won't cause that thread to appear when you click new posts.

As for most active, no idea. I'd guess its based on frequency, like a certain number of posts in some period of time.

OK. Maybe the "View New Posts" filter is unique to each member. If so what you are saying makes sense.

I just clicked on "Active" posts and the same three threads that were there yesterday are still the only ones there. Hmmm? Maybe it's one of those things that is just not meant to be understood
To avoid becoming anal about this I will just accept and move on. Maybe too late for the anal thing!

I may be off base and have confused unread with new. I open app, click unread, peruse those threads of interest, maybe click home and unread to refresh my shortlist. When done, click home and mark all read. Works for me.

I guess i have no idea how new us different or what active criteria are.
