Sidewall questions

Postby mandy » Tue May 20, 2008 11:35 pm

Hi everyone,

I was wandering around the forum and saw lots of examples of sidewall frameing. I saw that a lot of people use pocket hole jigs and screw all the framing together then cut to shape. I have also seen some cuting the whole frame out of 3/4 ply. What are the advantages and dis-advantages of each type?

Thanks
Mandy

I used 1X framing held together with biscuits, then I insulated it with rigid insulation and used 1/8in ply for both faces.

1X lumber is 3/4in thick so is the insulation, 3/4in ply and furring strips aren't really 3/4in.

It's really personal preference. I think th weight probably comes pretty close to the same I just found it easier cutting out the sheet of ply for a frame, didn't have time for gluing all the boards together and such. Less worry of it coming apart while you're building too.

I used 3/8" ply and 1" framing with the curves kerfed. Easier for me because I didn't really think I could cut the curves.

If you have a router then you can pre-make the frames and use the router to match your sides. However---screws and routers don't mix so glue and take the screws out before cutting. This is the way I will do the next.

I built my sidewalls (including the inside skins) lying on the trailer and then put them up. Pictures in the link in my signature.
