My offroad Camper

Did you just design your very own teardrop or tiny trailer? Want to discuss it? Here's the place to post your design for discussion!

Sure, it'll be in cm though :) These are all the outside dimensions, the height is from the top of the floor to the top of the roof.

160cm wide (63")
120cm tall at the rear bulkhead (47.2")
Body is 270cm long frame is 260cm long (106.3" and 102.4")

Is that all you need?

Got the transfercase in the Jeep done and tested all good :)

Image

Also made a door, the inner skin is on the outer is yet to go on.

Image

It is not flush with the inside as a trim will go on the wall of the trailer on the inside overlapping the door opening and the door will have a decent rubber seal mounted on it to fill the gap and help waterproof it. The outer overlap will have a thinner seal as well.

Image

I used door jamb material as it was nice and straight and already had the right shape to fit flush on the outside and let me sit the inner skin in the right distance.

Image

Windows should be here this weekend :)

Looking good.

If you don't mind where in Oz was the wheeling shot taken? Most of the wheelers I talk to, thier action shots are usually sparse trees and red dirt but they are out of Queensland, most around Brisbane.

Thanks,

Jim

It was taken west of Sydney, an area call Lithgow (Lake Lyell to be exact) around the Blue Mountains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Mountains . It's a lot cooler here and there is the occasional dusting of snow in the winter and the odd road closure if it's exceptionally cold. This area also has some commercial pine forests around it and in the above shot we were passing through an area very close to them.

Plenty of water around at the moment as well after some much needed rain :)

Steve,

Looks real good you need to start your album going so we can watch your progress as you begin to transform drawings into the real world.

Thank You for the info. Looks like some stunning country side.
Your pic by the pine farm looks very similar to the area around the Black Hills in South Dakota.

Unfortunately I haven't scanned in my wheeling shots from there yet

Looks like a nice place, get those wheelin pics in and post some up :)

Anyway, finally picked up my door windows today, hunted around for second hand ones but couldn't find anything small enough so ended up buying new. They are sliders and came with fly screens etc. I probably could have gone bigger but these cost enough as it was :( Should do the job anyway.

Shown here with my 10yr old son.

Hey Steve,

After seeing these pics, is your trailer gonna have pontoons on it, so it will float? :R

Finished the roof framing and put the outer skin on the front half (Trimmed it with the router). Need to add an extra spar where the roof sections join, I decided to put the outer skin on first, even though it's a hassle, to make sure I can ensure the seam is water proof. You can just see the rear most spar is two pieces with one twice the height of the other, this will be used for the upper section of the rear cabinets. I thought it would be easier to do it this way :) The inner skin will slide in from the front and butt up against it.

Image

Made the upper framing for the rear cabinets (also be the frame for the hinge for the rear hatch), used hardwood and am pleased with the strength, I can hang from it (200lbs) no problem. I will add some additional support as part of the cupboard framing though. In this pic the rear roof section is hanging over.

Image

The framing going back to the bulkhead will be for the sides of the two rear cupboards (shelf section in between them)

Image

Cant see much of a change from this pic but what the hey :)

Been a busy couple of afternoons :) Skinned the rear section of the roof and used plenty of glue. Also ran a spar on its side where the join of the skins were and smootherd it and the edges of the ply with glue, I'll also epoxy over it as the last thing I want is a leak.

Also put the roof hatch in, it's finally starting to get there and I'm keen to get the hatch and doors done along with the inner roof lining and front skin. I think when that's all done it'll be paint and registration and then I'll do the cupboards etc. I just want to get on the road :) I'm also curious on what the weight of the bare shell will be.

Anyway, couple of todays pics. I was going to try and avoid screws in the roof skin but it's too high to see it anyway and the button head screws do a great job along with a heap of glue.

All the silver ones lying there are counter sunk screws I was originally going to use but ended up taking back out and puting in longer button head ones.
