Alfred I used 5'x5' Baltic Birch to get the height. It might make a lot of waste for you to use on cabinets.

Maybe a little late, but why don't you use a roof like in the VolksWagen Carlifornia? When the kids are small, they can sleep in there, when they go out (sleeping in a tent), you take out the sleeping-area and have almost room to stand up. Just a thought
