Finally, I am building

Postby jj2k » Mon Feb 11, 2008 2:15 am

Well it's been a while since I posted here on this site.
I am a blacksmith by trade. The wife and I attend many art and craft shows and city festivals to sell our wares. Anyhow, last year we weathered a couple thunderstorms and wind storms in a tent while attending these shows. I decided to limit how far we would travel or how long a show we would do. Ended up that I mostly limited my income last year. I decided we needed an RV.
I wasn't prepared for todays RV market. I didn't need bells and whistles, I needed function. This site has been a tremendous inspiration. I ordered some plans off eBay for a simple tiny travel trailer. I found several errors in the plans and wasn't satisfied with them. So I ordered the plans for the Squidget. I am going to build a trailer somewhere between these two extremes.
I inherited an old motorcycle trailer. I have repacked the bearings and put on new tires. I have a light kit and put a tongue jack on the front. I'll take some pics and post them here as I go through the build. Hope y'all enjoy my journey.

For the time being I have nicknamed it the Redneck Flyer. LOL

Here is how the chassis looked this morning when I started.

And how it ended this afternoon.

Check and make sure you have the BBcode enabled in your profile.
The code you posted was fine. No reason it shouldn't work.

OK, I did a profile update and turned the bbcode on. Now I am reposting my message just to see if it works.

Thanx for the help!

A Painted Floor

Postby jj2k » Wed Feb 13, 2008 2:39 pm

I turned the floor over on the chassis and painted the underside. I used a porch and floor paint.

Image

Tomorrow I will roll it back over and attach it to the chassis.

The weather will be bad here over the weekend so that'll be it until next week. Then I will start on the walls.

Finished the floor

Postby jj2k » Fri Feb 15, 2008 10:09 pm

Well I rolled the floor back over yesterday. Drilled my holes and ran carriage bolts through the chassis. A buddy showed up and wanted me to make him some cooking irons and such for campfire cooking. (I'm a blacksmith) He does flooring and helped me put my linoleum down. So we worked a trade. Now I am ready to start on the walls.

This week

Postby jj2k » Fri Feb 29, 2008 10:00 am

Well, not a lot happened this week with the trailer. I got the panels spliced and the windows and door cut out. For several days this week the wind has been a factor, often blowing above 30 mph and gusting over 40 at times. Handling sheets of plywood would have been both comical and injurous. So I stayed in my shop and built other stuff.

The next couple of weeks will be about the same I expect. Next week , I am preparing for a Civil War Re-enactment. The week after that we have a St Pats Day Show to do. I am too busy for my own good. (but no complaints) I had hoped to have the trailer at least campable by St Pats Day. We could have used it that weekend!

We have no shows to do for two weeks after St Pats Day. So I hope to be campable by April! (best layed plans and all like that, LOL )

Happy trails,

back at it

Postby jj2k » Thu Mar 20, 2008 10:36 pm

Gosh has it been almost a month?

Well today I was finally able to turn my attention back to the RV. I built the right side wall. (the hardest one in my opinion) Tomorrow I will begin the left side wall and precut roof panels and spars and such. Hopefully on Sunday or Monday I can get the walls hung and start getting some real form and realization of the project. I'll post pics when I get to that point.

Happy Trails

The walls came up cause the floods went down LOL

Postby jj2k » Mon Mar 24, 2008 9:00 pm

Ok so today I got a late start on the trailer. But I got my walls hung and most of my spars installed. We are supposed to have 30+ mph winds tomorrow and the next 2 days so I wanted it as firm as it could be.
Tomorrow I start on the front, back and roof.
