Did you just design your very own teardrop or tiny trailer? Want to discuss it? Here's the place to post your design for discussion!

Here is my rough sketches to start my build....

Postby Gunswinger » Tue May 05, 2009 4:40 pm

I love to hunt, fish, and gold prospect these take you to out of the way places. It is just my wife and I now and we want something simple to get us there and back. With some comfort of course. I have looked and looked at designs and I think I have come up with what I like. This is taken from other designs and mostly one from 1speed on another forum. I really love what he did. When he posted his build he referenced everyone to this forum. Like I said I want a mildly off road unit. I have a 1991 Ford Explorer that I am modifying to also work with this trailer.

Image

In this sketch if you see something that you think I have missed just let me know. Or if you see ways to improve the design. I am open to any and/or all suggestions. Here is the front view. Like I said these are my thought sketches.

Sorry I don't know how to make the pictures larger. They were on 8 1/2 X 11 when I started. I want to make the galley with fold out counter tops on each side. (fat ass style) I think I will call the trailer "Brush Nugget"..

Of course to access the galley you would have to remove the canoe. That is not a problem. I am going to try and make the trailer match the explorer some what. Same tires and rims for sure. With a spare on each it would mean you would have to have more than two flats to have a problem. Four jerry cans on the outside for plenty gas for a generator or a dredge when gold prospecting. Both ac and dc electric. I do a lot of cast iron cooking and this galley would be great for that.

Looks like your on your way to a great build  Just remember, this forum runs on sawdust and pictures.

:applause:  What I can see of it looks good. If you look on Flicker (spelling) there should be a way to auto change the size.

Ditto on the pictures. ;)

flickr photo size

Postby danlott » Wed May 06, 2009 11:49 am

Your orginal photo size is still on Flickr. You just need to make sure that you link to the orginal photo. When you go to Flickr and you are on the photo you want to link to you need to click on the little "All Sizes" image/link on the top left of the photo. After the new page opens, then make sure to click on the "Original" link from the "Available sizes". This will then be the size that you uploaded to Flickr.

I was able to get a larger image based on your orginal post, but your "Orginal" size has a different file name and I can not find it, but you should be able to.

Thanks for the information and the help Danlott. Here is the other picture a little larger.

Looks like I got more questions than I have answers. I have an engineering background so these details are killing me. Of course my background is electrical. I designed and built electrical distribution equipment for the coal mines, all over the world.

I need to get all the dimensions ready, what I am going to do on the inside. How I am going to design the galley. What am I going to do for the outside and where on the trailer exactly will the axle set.

But you got to start somewhere. Thanks again for the help.

Here is what I will be towing with. 1991 Explorer. I am going to modify this also to work more with the trailer. Going to find four additional rims like these to use for spares and the trailer. Taking out the carpet and maybe using bed liner for the inside floor to make it a quick clean out.

Image

Up grading the bumpers and adding a winch/air compressor to the front. Maybe a rack on top and some off road lights. Want to also keep it a daily driver. By the way the color will most likely change.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I'll suggest putting a 6-8 in PVC pipe on either side of the canoe with a cap on one end and a screw cap on the other.Or screw caps on both ends. That should give you a place to store rods with reels on them maybe by sticking one in each end you could get up to 4 stored safely(using screw caps on both ends). They could be clamped on with conduit clamps or pipe clamps and would also keep the canoe from trying to slide to the side.

Gunswinger,

Those are nice plans!

I've got one worry: Too much tongue weight with the axle that far back and with so much out on the tongue of the trailer.

Can you adjust the axle position a bit forward?

welcome

Postby John T. Hodgen » Wed May 27, 2009 9:04 pm

Hey Gunswinger,
Welcome to the forum---I see that you are just down the road. I live in Summersville and just got thru with my 4x8 build. if you ever come up to the Dam camping let me know. As a side note--I too enjoy the gold thing, not doing but watching on tv. I've wondered if they had gold in the streams in WV.--its all around in neighboring states.??
My build pics of "Costa Lotta" are here- http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/panheadjohn60/ and on this website-- http://www.gearztv.com/index.php?conten ... c=12_14178 4 month total build time and about $1700.00. Good luck on your build and hope to meet up with you down the road.

John T....Thanks for the welcome maybe we can get together sometime in the near future and I can pump you for answers...LOL Nice job you did..

Prem....I will have the details worked out before I set the axle. I have reviewed the axle location information. Those were just a pencil idea sketch based upon another build that I had seen, on another forum... a guy named Jim (1speed) on the Expedition Portal forum.. What I am in the process of doing now is trying to draw the design out to scale so I can see what will be exactly where. I have looked up a lot of information on the weight of everything, ie plywood, fenders, and etc. So much my head hurts just thinking about it. LOL. I have rented a large garage to do the build in so that I can work and just leave everything until the next time I can work on it. I have also thought about moving the spare to the rear with a swing out mount so I can flip it over and use it as a table. I also wanted to make the galley swing out (fat ass) style. I might have to get a cad program or talk someone into working up my design for me. Like I said those are more of my thoughts. Thanks for keeping me straight. I like that. Thanks for your insight. I want everyone to comment so I can learn more and don't make a big mistake. Wow would that be a mess. Thanks again.

I also discovered that my design is bordering on the sawtooth XL design. I like it a lot. I guess some questions will only be answered when the build is on.

fatass style

Postby John T. Hodgen » Sat May 30, 2009 6:59 am

hey Gunswinger,
I made my galley doors/hatch like I did because I couldn't get my head around how to actually build a full-size hatch. :? Linda loves the fact, with the swing doors and swing up tables, that she can stand in one spot and reach everything that she needs while she's cooking. Kind of a surround style enclosure, if needed she can pull out another table from under the counter too. :applause:
I think that I want to build a Sawtooth XL or a Sunspot style box type trailer next. I'll be keeping up with your build when you get started. The floor, walls, and putting it up will go so fast---its the devil in the details that slow you down. :worship:  I like the fact that you got a garage so that you can leave it and come back to it, I used my in-laws and had to get the shell done fast but a weeks work I was in the barn then.
The one thing I would do different in the walls-instead of building a stick frame and sandwich the insulation--I'd cut out my ply where I wanted insulation, leaving wood ply to screw my braces/cabinets/counter to, then cover with exterior/interior thin ply. I'd think its a better/faster way and the weight wouldn't be that much different??!!! :worship:
Come up anytime. I'm putting an extra 4 in. memory foam in mine today while the rain has decided to clear up, may go camping tonight.

John T - The guy that I mentioned used a 3/4 sheet of plywood and made a cut out from that so there would be a minimum of joints since it would be used off road a little. I like that idea. Also I saw from his picture file that the roof have a crown in it toward the front. I also have a customer who builds race car cages and frames, who told me he would weld my trailer frame for free. Free is good. I will also use the but lap splice for the plywood so that there is a lot of glue joint and off set the joints. What does everyone do for the floor on the inside? Thanks for the invite and I may see you sooner than you think...

My wife complains all the time about the lack of counter space. That is why I made reference to the fat ass design that is posted here on the forum. It is a lot like what you have except the walls fold out. Making the counter all in a row and not bending around. Both are great and I am sure both have their good and bad points.

Like you said "Later by the fire"
