Here we go, starting with the trailer frame, I have some grand plans for the build to be revealed as the story progresses. (Don’t worry I plan on an extensive visual documentation) please don’t hesitate to let me know if you think I’m overbuilding.
TV is a Mazda 3…

All of the people with the right answers must be away!

How big a trailer are you contemplating, how much will it weigh and so on? Where are you going to pull it and with what?

The original tongues were less than 24" from the front of the box to the hitch. There are reasons to go longer, and reasons for a short tongue. I prefer short, but I would guess most tongues in this forum are closer to 48".

dwgriff1, 8'x5', Max weight 750kg (1653lb), pulling on-road with a Mazda 3.

Sorry Planovet, black and white?

That weight puts you well above the average on this chart (which I 'borrowed' from Sharon's album Posted: 2009-11-21 13:56:09).

I don't know the builds that are represented but it would seem you are pretty heavy for a 5'x8'.

What construction materials are you planning? I ask because I think somewhere along the line your calculations may be off - but if you truly think you are going to be that heavy then you probably want to hear from Andrew (angib). Or is 750kg the max tow rating for the Mazda 3?

Re-evaluate.
750kg is the Max unbreaked weight for a trailer in NSW and ACT.
I just checked and the recomended unbreaked weight for a trailer towed by a Mazda 3 is 500kg.
As the design progresses I will get a better Idea of weight.
Construction is ply, foam walls and Al roof.

This is just my opinion, take for what it is - just an opinion. If you are building a custom frame get your design goals set in terms of the body first, profile, galley features, etc. then you can make a better decision on what the frame 'needs' to be. Quite a few people have built VERY stout frames for very light weight teardrops. Many of the frames rival full sized camper frames which is a bit absurd considering the tear is generally no where near the size or weight of a full sized camper/caravan.

Have you picked a profile yet, either from the design library up top or your own variation?

Hello Captainkynan. Greetings from Finland. Very nice profile your doing. :applause: :applause:

You are correct with the tow weight with your Mazda 3. Here in Finland its also 750 kg max. unbraked.

Our Mazda 3 is 500 kg unbraked and 1200kg with brakes. What year is your Mazda 3? Sure love ours. ;)
