How Big is Your Coin Hoard

Postby D.J. » Fri Apr 19, 2013 12:36 am

I hate rolling coins. The TD bank chain (Toronto Dominion) has installed coin counting machines in over 300 branches. You feed in your coins and when you are finished you get a slip of paper that you redeem at the cashier. I went today with my first load of 4 coffee cans. There was some interest from the staff as to my final total. My total for today was $481.52 . I believe that I am about 1/3 done. I went out and splurged and bought "brand name" 55 plus multivitamins. .... D.J.

Good question,,,, have a Tupperware type box about the size of 2 cereal boxes that is overflowing....

Only reason I haven't done something is because its too heavy to move. Really should. If I ever had the job, I'd get rid of the penny...even with 5 of em, you can't even buy gum...it's time to stop minting them at the very least. Just like the half penny coins of antiquity.

I'd be tempted to stop printing dollar bills too....the life expectancy of the bill is too short, and it costs A LOT to print...

Some people hoard pennies for the copper value.

I agree, Gerry. The penny has outlived it's usefulness. It costs us more to make them than the coin is worth.

I have a fishbowl that is currently overflowing. I usually take it to my Credit Union where they have a coin machine. It's free until you get to a certain dollar amount. I usually just stop before I get to that amount.

As a child my father taught me how to count coins by giving me his coffee can or liquor bottle that he had filled. He told me that if I could count the contents correctly the first try that I got to keep the $$$$. It took a few tries but I eventually got the hang of it and reaped some very nice rewards. I still fill wine bottles and piggy banks with coins. I have lost count of how many I have now. Maybe time to teach the grand-kids.
