Hammock post

Postby Forrest747 » Mon Jun 03, 2013 9:13 pm

Wife got a smoking deal on a hammock, but the frame i do not trust. so going to put a 6x6 post in the ground.
I am thinking three feet down with a 10 inch form. gravel on the bottom.
now i trying to find some eye bolts that i want to put through the post.
so was thing just putting a bolt through the post and using a sling around teh post and connecting to the hammock. the bolt would keep sling from slipping down or do i keep looking for a eye bolt that will go through 6x6 post.

A long screw eye maybe, or threaded rod with something on the end like several chain links which gives you some adjustment, or the longest eye bolt you can get and countersink the nut into the post. I think the rod & chain would be best.

With a couple of good ole scout knots the rope shouldn't slide down. I take my hammock around and tie onto trees and posts. Wife doesn't trust my knots but I weigh alot more then she does.

Do you really need a 6x6 post? How about a 4x4 on each end, plenty strong, and then you could put a Simpson 4x4 post cap on either the top of each post -or- mount them laterally, at a chosen height, run a bolt thru the open ends (secure with a lock nut). I did this a few years back, for my neighbors kids, with a similar hammock. Of course, the load (small kid's weight) didn't put much stress on the galvanized sheet metal piece, but it could be reinforced with 2x4 under the bolt.

What i have found is a nice 6x6 10 foot pressure treated and going with that. started digging the first post hole last night and got about 18 inches so we are on our way. with a three foot hole i should have 7 feet to work with. going with the bigger post cause the wife will want both of us on it at the same time and that is alot of persons on that. still looking for a local supplier for the eyebolt. spec'd it out to a 1/2 inch diameter.

Try McMaster Carr for the eye bolt. I have some kind of eye thing that you put a bolt of any length through. It may be something the power company guys use. They may be used to attach a support wire to a pole.

Any hardware store or Home Depot or Farm Supply store should have a 6" x 1/2" eye bolt.
Drill a half inch hole thru the 6 X 6 (5 1/2 x 5 1/2), then use a 3/4 inch spade bit to recess the exit side so the nut will be recessed.

Have you tried Marshall's Industrial Hardware on California Ave just west of I215?

well i set the two 6x6 10 foot post, in 36 inches hole. holes were 12 inches in diameter at teh ground level i am sure 6 to 8 inchs at teh bottom. They are one inch off center, and 16 feet 9 inches from teh centers. set with 3 baqs of 80lb concrete. I would add about 6 inches and tamp it down solid then repeat. Slightly angled outward with the bubble touching the inner line, plumb the other way. I went through about 10 post to find the ones i liked. these had a couple of knots but no too worried about them. these two were the heaviest and without any major splitting. Ended up 7 feet above teh ground. I am happy with them.
