Ira, Different breeds have different needs. Research the breeds your most interested in. I did that before I got Cori, she is an Australian Shepherd. I wanted a dog that was about 40 to 50 lbs, (males are larger) smart, liked the water, and to play. She is perfect for me, and I can not imagine owning another breed. But you and your dog have to have training, without it just makes life harder. I spent 4 months training Cori 5 days a week for 30 min. Now I can take her anywhere off leash and have full control of her. (unless there is a squirrel arround...tehehe )

My brother has one of those, named Spurrier. He told me that they were at the park and saw a dog just like him. When the owner called his dog he yelled, "Hey Bowden get over here!" True story.

Think about a rescue dog -- maybe an older dog, too, by the way. They're often a lot less hyper than puppies, and somehow, dogs "know" -- you'll never find a more unconditional love.

Ours Jacks definaly are! We made the mistake of getting 3 puppys within 6 months of each other, and didn't have time to work with them individually. They are very smart dogs, and can definatly be trained if you have the time. They are very hardy, and have very few health problems.

We love ours, but they are getting old. We wanted to find a dog that was a little more laid back to take their place when they are gone, so started researching different breeds. Odie was interested in Italian Grayhounds, and saw one for sale locally. We "just went to look" and ended up with another dog (by the way, that is how we ended up with 3 Jack Russells, had 2, and "just went to look" at the 3rd).

We're actually glad that we got the Italian Grayhound, because the family that had her kept her locked up in a cage all day when they were at work, and must have beat her, because she is afraid of walking sticks and flyswatters.

Iggys are very hard dogs to house break, and require a lot of attention and excersize. They are also very delicate, and susceptible to broken legs when they are puppys. Ours was 2 years old when we got her, and we still have trouble with her haviong "accidents" in the house from time to time.
