House Hold Wiring

Postby Spadinator » Tue Nov 28, 2006 7:41 pm

I am baffled....as is my electrician!

While sitting watching the Utah Jazz game last night the lights in the kitchen, dining, and living room all flickered and went out. The GFCI's in the bathroom and kitchen are also out. Check the breakers...nothing tripped. Kitchen GFCI is warm to the touch. Now here is the baffled part.

Kitchen and Bathroom GFCI are on circuit 3 A & B. Lights are on 7 A& B. No power on circuit 7 breakers (not tripped). One hour later all power returns on all circuits. At the recommendation of the electrician....all GFCI's replaced.....breakers on circuit 7 replaced...no idea what caused it.....any clues?

I do not know what caused it but GFCI outlets do go bad. I had a new circuit put in my garage to run my woodworking tools and when it is cold out, I turn my mini-lathe or table saw on it pops the GFCI outlet and the breaker is fine.

I agree with the GFCI going bad but what is wierd is the light circuit going dead with out the breakers tripping. They are not even attatched to the GFCI's.

Not necessarily true that the lights are not wired to the GFCI's. My lights in the computer room are not on the same circuit as the wall plugs. If your electrical genius is like mine who knows how they wired the place. THe circuit could go to your GFCI first and then to your lights, explaining why the kitchen one got hot.

Check the main panel,or GFIC for a loose netural wire for circuit involved. GFIC trips because of surges to netural side. A warm GFIC may mean a back feeding current through the ground. Lack of a neutral may have prevented GFIC from tripping . Some breaker finder signal generators have a circuit testers built in the generator half that may show circuit problems.

Circuits 3 & 7. Both odd numbered breakers on the right side of the panel. No trips on GFI's or any breakers. Could it have been one leg of the 220V coming into the house had a power interuption? If you can't explain it, you can always blame the power company. :D
