paulownia--Aussie wood?

Postby tk » Sun Mar 11, 2007 8:26 pm

Anybody know much about paulownia(sp) wood? A local just started growing it a couple years ago. I talked to him at Ag Day at my kid's school. It's very light--lighter than pine but not a light as balsa--and relatively strong compared to other lightweight woods. I understand it's originally from China and a lot is grown in Australia. Looks like ash (from the samples I saw)--light color, significant grain. I think it would be a terrific cabinet wood for any application (such as teardrops) where weight is a concern. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

what does the tree look like?

there are some "Aussie import fast-growing shade trees" in West Texas that grow just like weeds, and have pale wood, but it's not strong and has a terrible odor.

the common name is "paradise tree."
it doesn't bear fruit, is not an evergreen (in West Texas) and comes back from rhizomes or root-knots underground if you try to kill it. (yes, we try. It's a water hog!!)
