Not the first animal to do this. I used to work at a nursing home, and the resident cat & dog both did that. Just never made the press like that cat. They truly know something is going to happen. Our policy was no animals on the bed of residents{health & resident safety issues}. The dog would spend all the last hours in the doorway to the room, and the cat would come & go to that room only if the resident was soon to depart. We have cats, and even seen our other cats do that to one that was about to die, even if they didn't get along in life.

Side note; I have had residents, friends, and even my own father tell me that they will soon die. My father told me on Christmas of 1991 he would not be around for our new years dinner. He died December 31st 1991 at 4:20PM. When I worked at the home ,and a resident told me that,I would contact the wing supervisor, and usually within 2 weeks they were gone. Just one of lifes mysteries

When I read the story in the paper this morning, the question did cross my mind, "Does the cat detect impending death, or is the cat CAUSING the people to die?"

"Hello. My name is Fluffy. I am the Death Cat."

I am very allergic to cats. If I were on my death bed and one showed up, it would send me over.

But like the article says, it has to be very helpful for the families to get that one last chance to be with their loved ones in those final hours.

For those of you who don't live with them regularly ... cats have a very delicate sense of hearing and an even sharper sense of smell. For those of you who do live with them regularly, pay attention to the 'body language' and 'group dynamics' sometime when the cats are not particularly interested in you. These creatures communicate in ways humans cannot reliably detect or explain, and do so all the time.

In very ill or elderly people, the "process" of heartbeat, bowel sounds, etc. becomes noticeably different during a crisis.

Also, as kidneys tend to quit before other organs, the person's body and outgoing breath will have a different smell. Cats, and dogs, can notice that difference long before a human.

Sorry guys...

But stupid, selfish cats are still stupid, selfish cats.

The truth is that when"medical" personnel in this nursing home know that someone has hours to live, they cover them with an electric blanket.

And THIS is what turns that cat on and supposedly turns him into a "psychic."

Plus, I think everyone there is all wacked about this in the first place.

Man oh man--this is the kind of media nonsense that got us into IRAQ.

It's a stupid CAT!!! Just a CAT!!!

And we all have to stop believing everything we read.
Here we go again!

The story ran on national news tonight. His name is Oscar.

I think maybe Ira is onto something with the electric blanket, but

I don't feel comfortable with the way Oscar was staring at me from the TV. :frightened:

and Jake just tucked his tail and left the room . . .

So nobody but the dying get electric blankets in this place? And there's only one electric blanket in use at any given time?
This is the kind of "scientific explanation" that gives us man-made global warming!

Sorry Madjack - I just couldn't resist!

While helping my parents pack up a moving truck as they were preparing to move to thier retirement house, my dad stopped me in the middle of loading boxes to tell me that when he died, he wanted me to take the ring off his finger and give it to my son. 3 days later, my otherwise healthy father had a heart attack and died. It was a little eerie.
