About 15 years ago an odd British TV station showed six stunning travelogues made by a guy travelling around the USA, financing his travels by giving film shows at colleges. The Super-8 films were shown on TV with a 'new age' instrumental soundtrack and the occasional Kerouac or similar reading. The programs were broadcast, stunned those that saw them and then completely disappeared.
I'm delighted to say that it looks like these films will soon be made available on DVD (in Merkan NTSC format as well as Yurpeen PAL). I've discovered today that the film-maker is actually a Brit - which may explain why the simple sights he filmed resonated so strongly over here.
There are six short (2-3 mins) 'taster' vids on his RetroRoadTrips web site, but I'd recommend 'Home in October' as being really representative of his work.
Maybe this guy's work would just seem ordinary to you, but you might like to give it a try.
