My New Bench Project

Postby halfdome, Danny » Wed Dec 12, 2007 9:14 pm

I picked up my steel order yesterday from Tacoma Steel and I'm anxious to get started on my adjustable bench. Just my luck  my timing is a little off as tomorrow afternoon I'm the guest of honor for a arthroscopic debridement & capsular release of the shoulder. In other words they are going in and removing the scar tissue that plagues me ;) . Hopefully I'll be able to do some welding this weekend. I look at this as practice for welding up the chassis for the next teardrop. I should be pretty good by then. Never thought of steel as pretty but for what I spent it's beautiful. For those that arn’t familiar what I’m building it’s the Motorcycle bench that Brick suggested but customized for my needs. I'll add photos as I progress :) Danny

I sure hope your shoulder gets better fast. Best of luck with the surgery.

Thanks Brick, that is one awesome lathe, I really enjoy it. It's a made in Canada General 260, 1 hp, 3 phase with single phase converter forward/reverse infinite speeds on 4 pulleys, 20" swing, 39" between centers and weighs in at 560 pounds. It was the best money could by in 1995 but One Way makes a nicer one now. I'm not going to put wheels on the bench but make a raised platform covered in plam so I can move it with the pallet jack, it will add some heft to the bottom too. :) Danny

John, yes I looked at those years ago. What I'm after is a 4' x 8' work bench that I can raise and lower. I already have a pallet jack, the yellow item in the photo and a small 3 wheeled Hyster fork lift. When I start filling up my small shop with project parts I can't get a pallet jack or fork lift over to the work bench. I then have difficulty removing a heavy item off the bench by myself (I work alone). Thanks everyone for the well wishes on today's surgery. I'm told it will be just fine and my shoulder will work as originally equipped . Whatever the outcome I'm tired of it all (6 months) and will resume work as soon as possible no matter what range of motion is there. :) Danny

I heard a rumor that Santa's reindeer were having a hard time navigating to the north pole because of some shift in the earth's magnetic field. Seeing all that steel in your shop, we now know the reason.

Best of luck on the surgery.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

The surgery went very well. The surgeon found some scar tissue in the joint capsule but found extensive scar tissue in the subacromial area that's above the joint capsule, a first for him. Yesterday I was able to make some progress on the bench despite the crummy plans. The guy who made up the plans didn't put dimensions on the drawing but makes you rely on text scattered over many pages :x . I've made some modifications to his idea. Today I'll be welding on the stops for different height adjustments, cleaning up some of my Frankenstein welds and making the plywood base. I still need to work out what the :x he is trying to do where the floor jack goes.
I'm use to re engineering plans but this is ridiculous. :fb Danny

Guess I'm not the only one that uses those elcheapo plastic fold up horses!!
They have served me well tho, I've had a lot of weight on them and they have yet to collapse. Looks like yours get a lot of use too!

I like them because they stack well. Their coated in contact cement and I've killed a few. All you have to do is shift the load severe enough and they give in. Danny
