Save Big Bucks On Gasoline!!!!!

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby BPFox » Thu May 01, 2008 9:49 pm

I have a sure fire way to bring gas prices down. It works every time it's tried. When the price of gas goes up, stop buying it. Don't laugh, it works. If everyone just stopped buying the stuff the price will come down. The problem is, most people do just the opposite. When one station raises it's prices, folk flock to the station that hasn't raised it's price yet to "top off". They are buying gas they don't need to avoid paying a high price later. The problem with this plan is buying gas they don't need and rewarding the oil companies with a sale they don't deserve. 90% of all cars on the road have enough gas to get by for at least three days without buying gas. If the gas stations in your town had zero gas sales for three days after raising their prices I guarantee they would drop their prices significantly. The sad reality is that folks will continue to panic, continue to "top off" and the oil companies will continue to reap the benifits.

If you do this much around here I'm afraid you'd find your ass hypermiling into court. Last I heard shutting your engine off while driving down the road was illegal. More than that it is very dangerous, he fails to note that nothing in modern vehicles functions properly when the car isn't running, including the steering and brakes. I'm afraid if you were involved in an accident and they found out you were doing this you'd most likely find yourself in a heap of trouble.
Besides the fact that if I were behind him he'd likely need a new bumper, there's nothing more frustrating than some idiot that can't maintain a constant speed traveling down the road.

Great but they dont snap till 26 lbs... If your tires require 35 + lbs, By the time you get to 26lbs your well under recommended.

Also, if you use any kind of cap that is metal... its a great idea to wipe a lil graphite anti sieze compound on the threads before installing if you dont want to ruin the cap taking it off with pliers 6 months to a year later.

Going to light weight aluminum wheels helps too, as you're accelerating less mass, which requires less energy. It'll help your 1/4 mile times too.

Though it's slightly off subject, I heard pros and cons of adding 2oz of acetone to 10gal of gas as a way to increase mileage. It supposedly works by increasing the vaporization of fuel.

I did a Snopes on it and they say it doesn't work, but I am still sceptical as quite a few people say it does work. Does anyone here have any actual experience with Acetone in gas? I trust you guys more than Snopes.

Thanks.

This whole article is excellent! I thought it may be from some publication like The Onion or something.

Usually free at headshops and live music/funky local places around here.

After searching the new term "hypermiling" its apparently a legit movement. I can relate to "using your cruise control". I saw you 20 minutes ago on the horizon, you were a speck about a mile ahead of me. My "cruise" is set at 75mph. Why when I go to pass you on the left do you suddenly decide to go the same speed? Everybody's backing up behind me, now. You probably have cruise control, please use it.

Can't wait to start "hypermiling" in the ol' family Dodge; I'm personally working on an extendable tow-hitch that will stealthily hook itself to the vehicle in front of me!

Seriously, accelerating slowly, coasting to a stoplight slowly without stopping, has gained me about 2mpg. I'm up to (no lie) 16mpg on the family dodge (it has Hemi badges on it, whatever that means). That's commutin' mileage, not hwy/drag racing mileage.

Ah jeez, what's that?
How did that pic get in there?
