Astronomy Buffs

Postby alffink » Mon May 05, 2008 7:00 pm

There have been a few posts over the forum with questions concerning telescopes and astronomy in general.

For those with even a curious interest in Astronomy, keep next Saturday, May 10 free.

May 10 this year is International Astronomy Day and astronomy clubs all across the US and Canada and around the world for that matter, will be hosting special events to introduce the general public to the beauty of our Universe and our night sky.

Just go to your favorite search engine and search for "Astronomy Clubs"
there will be several different lists come up...pick your state or province
and then look for a club located near you.

You can also search for Astronomy Day 2008, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, will have a list of several of the clubs participating this year.

Now if you happen to be in S. Cal you could join me and the Riverside Astronomical Society at one of two locations in the Riverside area
1) in front of the Barnes and Noble bookstore at the Galleria at Tyler
91 fwy at Tyler Ave
2) in front of the Borders bookstore at the Riverside Plaza, three blocks west of the 91 fwy on Central Ave.

Now at least keep looking up, from around the campfire or through a telescope.

Astronomy

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Mon May 05, 2008 8:40 pm

Thanks for the info....my class and I are studying astronomy and have had the good fortune to have an Astronomy Professor come in to do lessons with us. We will be sure to "Google" that day and have a Moon Watch that night. When I was at the Dam Gathering this weekend, I did plenty of star gazing at night. So amazing how much more you can see when you get rid of (or reduce) all the light pollution. There's a lot of "stuff "up in that sky now. Our Astronomy Mentor mentioned last time that it is a possibiliy of having moving satellite billboards (ads). Geesh...that's really adding some human clutter to the stars.

Astro-photograhers are already complaining about the clutter that the current crop of satellites create while they photopgraph the heavens,
could you imagine what it would be like to have visable advertisements streaming accross the dark sky or what was a dark sky??

I sure hope it never comes to that!!

Al,
I try not to think about it....there are so many manmade objects already cruisin' through the night skies. The Prof. said it could be a real possibilty, and it would be premium air space. I hope not too!
