The Mountains are burning

Postby mandy » Wed Apr 30, 2008 10:31 pm

The Manzano Mountains to the east of Albuquerque have been on fire for over two weeks. It looked like they had it under control but today is very windy and the "Trego" fire exploded out of control. Now that this is happining the state will probably clamp down on the use of camp fires and charcol grills. But thats OK because we have been so dry this year and any little spark can set if off.

I heard that So Cal is having trouble with forest fires as well I hope every one there is OK.

Sorry to rant but this just saddens me because it was human caused to begin with.

Mandy

PS heres a pic of it from 30 miles away!!!

I'm OK cause I live far from the Manzanos and the wind is blowing the smoke east. I just feel bad for all the people that live on the mountain that had to evacuate and for all the people who live east of the mountain that have to put up with the smoke.

WOW
And you said it was human caused too.
Thats too bad. Don't they teach Smokey The Bear anymore? All of that mess, and the people to blame will just say, "whoops!"
Sorry :(

Hey Mandy,
We used to go to Cloudcroft and Ruidoso about 5 times a year.
It was so sad quite a few years back when the fires took out many many acres. The fire near Mayhill was caused from a spark when a man cranked his lawnmower. He later committed suicide because he was so guilt ridden.
Hope you stay safe as well as all of our So Cal friends

Dianne: It is pretty sad that this has happened here of all places because Smokey the Bear is an institutuion here. They found him as a cub clinging to a burnt tree halfway burnt himself in the lincolin national forest. So you would think that people would know better.

Linda: I have camped out side of Mayhill but that was before the fire. I haven't been there since. I bet it looks sad to see so much burnt up.

The wind is real bad up there. I have my camp near Mayhill and there's an extreme fire danger in that mountain area right now. No fires. It really takes away from the camping experience and we're going up next weekend. There was fire along both sides of the road last week near the Inn of the Mountain Gods on the way to Riudoso. Last year was nice as the mountains had enough rain.

I think I heard someone say there was fire out near the Grand Canyon as well. This whole area is very windy right now.

Be carefull out there!

Pres: I was wondering what happened to that fire I haven't heard of any thing since Saturday. I hope all is well there.

The Monzano Mountains are still burning but it is now 50% contained, lots of people lost there homes and animals. It is bone dry here still no rain.

I hope things turn around soon.

I checked the Forest Service's fire watch page and they say the Trigo fire in the Manzanos is now 60% contained and the South Tularosa fire is 70%. The ten-day forecast says possibly showers late next week - let's hope!

Cory: Thats good to hear that the fires are calming down. Let's hope it rains soon the last thing I want is to have the campgrounds shut down due to high fire risk.
