Warning raw tomatos might have Salmonela.

Postby mandy » Thu Jun 05, 2008 11:20 pm

The New Mexico Department of health just put out a Warning saying that raw tomatos are suspected of giving about 40 people Salmonela. They still do not know the source but are adviseing every one to not eat raw tomatos. Here's the story http://kob.com/article/stories/S464453.shtml?cat=605

There have been other cases in 9 other states so be careful especially the very young and the elderly.

Thank god there has never been a do-nut scare!
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

IIRC, salmonella on vegetables is on the skin of the vegies, not actually in it.

After the Spinach outbreak a while back, washing vegetables was strongly recommended.

So, I wonder, would washing your tomatoes before eating them take care of this problem? The news story doesn't say.

I don't imagine fast food joints wash their tomatoes before slicing and serving.

Time to do some googling.

My younger brother worked in a subway and they would just get the tomatos just as they were from the bin and put them in the slicer.
