Where to go in New England?

Postby MSG Hall » Tue Jun 10, 2008 5:28 am

As most of you guys know I am coming home after a 15 month stay here in sunny Bagdad.

Well I missed two anniversaries, two mothers’ days and two of my beautiful bride’s birthdays. We have been married 22 years, and I’ll tell you guys, I am in love with that girl just as much now as I have even been. She is my whole life.

I want to take her on a trip this fall. She loves to look at the leaves changing color in the fall, so here is the plan. Just her and I at a bed and breakfast for a week or so…

But where should we go? What is there to do? I’m not a person to sit around, I need to be doing something but I have no idea what. we have been to Niagara falls a couple of times and that was fun. But I just don’t know what to do or where to go.

A would really appreciate any suggestions you guys could give me.

You could try the mountains (Poconos or Adirondacks) they are really beautiful in the fall!! The Adirondacks have lots of lakes and ponds too!!

Hey Bruce, I've been to New England twice back in the 90's. Vermont around the Green Mounatins is really pretty. Outside of Burlington is the Morgan Horse museum. (If you're into horses, my wife's a horse nut)

South of the Green Mountains is a town called Weston, it's right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. It also has the Vermont Country Store which is pretty cool cos you can find stuff you haven't seen since you were a kid.

If you're driving, I'd definitely cut up through the Adirondacks, then go on up to Plattsburg, New York, take the ferry across Lake Champlain to Burlington and go explore Vermont.

Our Southern accent kinda freaked folks out a bit, but in a nice way. Folks were pretty friendly.

Hope this helps you a little bit. ;)

A bit beyond New England but I am a major fan of the Adirondacks. You probably won't make it home in time for the Dave & Kate's Camp ADK Spring Tear-Up but I would definitely recomend their Fall Tear-Down! We won't be able to make it for spring either but I'm hoping after I move to Missouri we can make it for fall, gas prices be damned!

Sorry, wasn't paying attention - I just noticed the bit about staying at a B&B rather than a teardrop trip.

I really love Mystic Seaport in Connecticut and I'm fairly certain the area abounds with B&Bs.

Bruce,

I agree with Joseph about Mystic, CT and the Seaport Museum. The drive through the coastal towns on the roads less traveled is beautiful in the fall.

The other half and I did a fall trip up the coast in the greater new england area , trees ablaze with color, she likes to machine quilt so we hit various fabric stores et al....for me the roads less traveled provide the most bang for the buck especially if you research the route on the internet or send away for the states tourist books, lots of small town happening you'd never know about......and by the way  Thank you for what you do, God bless, and get home safe...

I'd recommend Acadia National Park. Went there for my honeymoon. The memories of the place lasted longer than my marriage but that's OK. I'd go back to Acadia second!

I was going to suggest the Acadial National Park area also. [On the coast of Maine]

It is a beautiful place... You have mountains and the sea.. Rocky shores and a few sandy beaches.

and there are things to do.

hiking, walking, biking, kayaking. Whale watch tours.. Rock climbing lessons. Shopping I was going to say horse back riding.. but you now have to have your own horse. glidder or bi-plane tours.

The park road.. and others are great to bike on. They also have close to 50 miles of carriage paths.. for walking or biking. They are smooth and technically not difficult. but beautiful [and hilly]. There are many many wonder hikes in the area.

The tallest mountain you can drive up. Sunrise is incredible there.. The top.. shares duties as one of the first places to receive each days first sunlight for the US of A [along with Eastport Maine]

Bikes and kayaks are rentable in the area.. kayak guided tours are available...

The bigger of the nearby towns.. has lots of resturants.. and shopping. There are plenty of B+b's as well as hotels in the area.

There are several places to go in New England in the fall and a few have been mentioned.

Ditto on Mystic Seaport area, it's wonderful. Lots of historical stuff there, great dinning opportunities as well.

Acadia, another excellent location. Rocky coast and everything Glenn mentioned.

Green Mts are also quite nice, smaller than the White Mts in NH but still quite pleasant in the fall. There are a lot of fall festivals in Vermont as well. In a way the Vermont area aims towards the NY tourists.

Western Mass in the Berkshire Mts, have several back roads, Boston Pops Summers in that local. Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Ma. wonderful old hotel, nice size rooms, all decorated in antiques. Norman Rockwell museum is right down the road. Main St. is kept in the same design as Rockwell's famous painting of Stockbridge. The area also has many lakes and streams for fishing, canoeing, etc. It also has the original Yankee Candle factory which is an interesting place to tour, as well as maple sugar farms but fall is the wrong time of the year for sugaring.

White Mts, Conway NH area is another great place to visit. Mt. Washington is there, quite a trip but you can take a train up the mountain and save your vehicle it's struggle to get up to the top. Antique shops abound as well as state and National Parks and as someone mentioned there's a couple covered bridges in the area.

There's always Cape Cod and the Islands. They all have great B&B's as well as a quieter lifestyle in the fall once the tourist go home. The colors of fall are there but not as accented as the mountains. In my experience, NH had the best fall foliage but that could have been the seasons I went there and not in some of the other locations.

Hope that helps. You might spend some time at Yankee Magazine's website. They highlight different areas and have excellent pictures and articles about life in New England. They even have a section on fall foliage. http://www.yankeemagazine.com/
