Claysburg residents growl about police shooting of bear

CLAYSBURG -- The Pennsylvania Game Commission is investigating the shooting death of a bear by police in Blair County.

The shooting Wednesday in a residential area of Claysburg had some locals questioning the officers' use of force. At least 150 residents watched the confrontation unfold.

Commission spokesman Jerry Feaser says investigators are sorting through conflicting accounts about how aggressively the bear was acting and whether the bear was reacting to the growing crowd at the scene.

The bear came down from a tree after authorities fired a tranquilizer dart at it. The bear started running when the officers fired and killed it.

Greenfield Township police say one man was arrested for disorderly conduct after the shooting.

Len, I saw that on TJ's and the more I think of it the madder it makes me. Poor little bear didn't even look full grown.

Wouldn't get away with it here and doesn't look like they will there either. That was some mad people.

Yes Len,

Miriam and I saw it together where you posted it on the Tearjerker site and it made me sick. The bear is supposed to be the wild animal, not the people. I am not an animal rights person and I understand and agree with hunting for food, but this was basically cold blooded killing for no reason. It makes me ashamed I'm human. :(

That was really stupid!!! I fail to see why they would shoot it after it's been tranqed and it's heading for the woods.
I had one bigger than that in my back yard a few days ago, less than 30' from my porch (where I was sitting at the time), didn't bother a thing, not even my dog. Now if I'd have left him be he'd have torn down my suet feeders cause that's what he was after. All you have to do with most of them is move and they generally head the other direction. I just stood up and he wander off into the woods.

I have said this before and I'll say again. What do we expect when we move into their territor? Poor animal probably was stunned by the tranquilizer and probably didn't know what it was doing. If the police were so concerned about the peoples safety they should have blocked off the area and made everyone go inside.

Sorry just the way I see it.

That whole situation was a mess. The cops didn't establish a safe zone around the bear. People were out there with the children, adding to the risks. Nobody seemed to be in charge. Nobody seemed to know what they were doing.

Stupidity piled onto stupidity.

All-in-all, I was pretty disgusted by the behavior of most of the people in the video.

I would be more concerned about my safety than the bear, I counted 18 shoots and the bear was still running.

Looks to me like one cop panics and the rest just follow his lead and start firing. Maybe some training is in order at the local PD

If you have a cop who panics at a running away "juvenile" bear you have a cop who really needs to turn in his badge and get a job in a day care center for baby's only. Come on guys, the poor bear was hiding in a tree. He was scared. Not attacking anyone. :(
