Miriam: Watch out for the penguins

Miriam,

Those are great pictures of the polar bears you have, but you have to tell them to watch out for the penguins :) :)

I love that picture!

Except that polar bears live in the Northern Hemisphere and penguins in the Southern.

Here's one for ya Miriam!

Welcome back Pappa J. How goes the rebuild. Anything we can help with?[/quote]

Thanks for the kind words. I don't need anything at this time, but that will change soon!! . Though I was so disappointed with the first one, that for a while, I was just going to throw in the towel.

I think I put way too much emphasis on getting it done in a hurry instead of correctly. I won't make that mistake again.

I decided to give it another go this summer. I've been studying the generic Benroy Plans for the last few weeks, but I have some other stuff to take care of first.

To make a long story short, I had surgery on my hand in November, another procedure to be done tomorrow on my leg, and we had a pipe burst in the kitchen in September, and just recently have gotten everything in the house back together from that. (Five rooms had damage)

Anyway, I've been lurking all along, I just haven't had much to say. .

bears and dogs

Postby M B Hamilton » Mon Jun 23, 2008 8:58 am

The polar bear/sled dog photos always get lots of "ohs" and "ahs" because people just don't know.

The dogs are owned by Brian Ladoon, Churchill, Man., Canada. He has lost dogs to the bears. One time twenty dogs, some killed in the attack, others destroyed as a result of their wounds. Brian was brought up on charges following that attack.

He continues to expose his dogs to this danger (yes, polar bears are dangerous. I've been out on the the arctic ice, and even stalked by the odd polar bear. Take my word on this) because photographers are willing to pay to see it and photograph it. And the photographers make money from off people buying their photographs. And the dogs get it in the neck.

I'm sorry if this upsets anyone. But you need to know the truth about all those "cute" polar bear/sled dog photos.

There are numerous articles online that offer a somewhat different perspective about the Polar Bear attack on the sled dogs.

And the penguin photos are obviously photo shopped.

Take care

Bears and sled dogs

Postby M B Hamilton » Mon Jun 23, 2008 4:55 pm

PapaJ: Obviously photo shopped, but imaginative, and fun too.

I know Brian. And I also know his version of why it happened (and surprisingly it absolves him of any blame). The wild life biologists involved in the incident didn't see it that way.

Bottom line for me: Polar bears are dangerous animals. Polar bears and sled dogs are both carnivores, and are therefore competitors for food. There is no natural friendship or alliance between the two species. Polar bears are the top of the food chain in the arctic, for them everything else there is seen as potential food. The bears are still attracted to the area where Brian keeps his dogs. Brian is making money and getting his fifteen minutes of fame from what happens. And that appears to be what Brian cares about.

Anyone is free to disagree with me, but knowing what I know, that's where I stand.

Polar Bear are also territorial, and will protect territory that they live on. And yes they will see dogs or even humans as dinner if in need of food.

Since when are sled dogs permanent members of the Arctic wildlife?

I also havent seen too many penguin above the arctic circle nor have I heard of polar bear enjoying a penguin steak..   :scratchthinking: :rofl2:

I,ll let you know if a sighting is made here under the Arctic Sky

The male Polar Bear weigh up to 600 kilo and can be over 2.5 meters long. The female is about as half as small.

The Latin name is Ursus maritimus, meaning the Bear of the Sea.
Once in a while they have been seen wondering into the very tip of our country from the Northern parts of Russia.
