My daughters have a 94 Escort 1.9 and a 98 Contor 2.0, both with the same belt tensioners. One is new and the other about 2000 miles ago. They both chatter/jump really bad when idling. Makes a lot of noise. Any suggestions ?

what about the belts? are they new or do they have miles on them? The serpertine belts wear patterns on the pulleys(especially the smmoth ones) and on the face of the beltt (non grooved side)

Are you talking about the timing belt or the accessory drive belt?

Accesory belt tensioner. One belt is new (2000 Miles) other is old. On the Escort it seems like the belt is too long as the tensioner pulley is pushing the belt to witin a fraction of an inch from another pulley ( can't remember which at the moment) but it is the correct belt.

Try removing the belt and checking all the pulleys for looseness or bad bearings. If they check out ok, double check the belt routing.

On my Mazda/Ranger, I had a serp belt pulley let go. I don't remember if it was the idler or the tensioner but the one on the truck was plastic, when I bought a new one from the Ford dealer (parts were cheaper from Ford than Mazda) the new one was metal.

I put an ac-delco tensioner on my Contour last year and haven't noticed any chatter.

Not sure about a 94 escort, but a 98 contour has 4 different belts listed based on A/C and build date. They vary from 80-87" long so if you had the wrong belt there it could be part of the problem.

Thanks for the input. Will check build dates and belts. They both seem like they are too long.
