Wooden Car that goes 240 mph

This wooden car is featured in Wood Magazine (october 2008 Issue 186). It is called the splinter. I found its finish interesting...fiberglass epoxy. Just like some TD builders use (myself included).

Joe Harmon is a grad student who is building the splinter sports car for his senior project. He has some pretty original designs and ideas for making bodies out of wood.

Very cool. I would love to see it in person. I would be a bit apprehensive about wood suspension parts. If he ever decide to race. he could draw a whole new line of sponsers! Titebond, Epoxy products, etc.

Makes you wonder what this young man's future will be like. He is a genius, no doubt.

And he probably has more clamps then any of us!

It was on the Discovery channel last night on a NextWorld segment called Future Cars. They had some very cool cars on the show including this wooden one. Mostly made out of laminate. The wheels are wood also and the spokes didn't break until 6000# of pressure. Very impressive.

I was wondering why the water balloon was getting bigger... and then it hit me.

There actually is something for the TD constructor at the Wood Magazines site on the car. Watch the video on making your own vacuum bag and how they used multi layers of bamboo with outer skin of cherry for strength, weight and just plain good looks. I sure could see something like this on a lightweight curved rear hatch for a TD or even the whole thing. Possibilities of getting a really nice light weight trailer that looks awesome.
