ICE CREAM MAKER??

Postby Lesbest » Tue Sep 02, 2008 8:22 pm

Have an old Sears electric ice cream maker, and the plastic bucket is starting to look real ratty from the salt? It looks like it is peeling in places.

Bought a new Rival unit and it didn't turn the bucket 15 times before the motor crapped out, tried to help it along, nothing doing. The bucket that holds the ice is oval, the container for the ice cream mixture is round. Not a good combination methinks.

Was on closeout at WM for $19.00, beware, they did take it back, but don't waste you time with this unit.

Now I guess it's time to surf Epay for a good one. Any recomondations?

Thanks, Les

Les,

I found a 32 year old electric ice cream freezer on Ebay that had never been used. The lady I got it from said her Dad would get it out of the box every couple of years but no one would make ice cream for him.
It works great! I gave $7.00 + shipping.

Ours is a Cuisinart. It cost a bit more, but it's been going strong for five years now. Buy a second bowl, then you don't have to refreeze the bowl when you want to make multiple batches. Yummm.

Dean, that may have been true a couple years ago but not any more. You can cook with the best of them!

No electricity required....just roll it around camp for 20 minutes. Any kids or grandkids who like to play soccer?

I haven't ever used one of these, but they do look cool.

My neighbor at the last ITG had one, pretty neat. He made a little wooden teeter totter that 2 people could sit and foot operate that would roll it back and forth with out getting out of your chair or putting down your beverage 8)

Ice Cream (Made in a 12” D.O.)

1 small package vanilla instant pudding
2 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup of egg substitute
1/2 Tbsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. lemon juice
1 cup whipping cream
1 12 oz. can evaporated milk

Chill a 12” D.O. in an ice chest.
Mix pudding and milk in a bowl.
In a separate bowl, mix sugar, egg, vanilla and lemon juice.
Add to pudding mixture.

Pour mixture into a dry and very cool 12” D.O.
Add whipping cream and evaporated milk; stir.
Put lid on Dutch oven.
Place oven in a 16” bowl or bucket.
Arrange crushed ice and rock salt around oven as you would in an ice cream freezer (alternating 1 inch layers of ice and 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch layers of salt).
Placing ice on lid (no deeper than the lip) will cool oven down faster.

Lift the lid and stir every 2 to 5 minutes. It will go slowly at first until the oven cools off. Add ice and salt to bowl or bucket as needed.
Total freezing time is 30 to 45 minutes.
The ice cream may be eaten soft, or if you prefer harder ice cream, you may replace the lid and cover it with ice and salt.
Additional ingredients can be added to ice cream when it starts to thicken.
(We added chocolate chunks and cherries)

Man that's a cool way to make ice cream Dean. Now I have an excuse for another DO
Probably take too long to cool down after making chili, to get ice cream so an ice cream DO would be perfect.

Also easier to take, than an old hit and miss engine and all that stuff.
