"How much force is required to pull this weight?"
I asked, "Are those fixed pulleys?"
He said, "Yes."
I said 100lbs because there is no advantage, the pulleys are just changing the direction. He asked me if I was sure, I started thinking that it was a trick question but I stuck to my answer. I qualified it by saying that it may actually be more because you have friction in the pulleys. He gave me his answer, but then I said it isn't like a block and tackle because the pulley doesn't move with the weight. He started to think about it and said, "You may be right, I'll have to check my notes."
I was seriously thinking about it on the drive home, hoping that I was right. To gain an advantage, you have to trade speed to get power. To get more power, you have to pull more rope. That didn't happen in his example.
I hope I was right, at least I didn't back down and change my answer. Regardless if I get the job of not, they will probably remember me for that.
