Registration Question

Postby Traveling_Dan » Sat Oct 18, 2008 1:05 am

I’m new to this trailer stuff. I’m writing because I saw a post where someone was talking about taking their trailer to get registered. I wanted to know how it was registered. The reason I ask is that I’m looking at building a Tiny House trailer as seen from this site: www.tumbleweedhouses.com. Larger than the tear drops shown on this site, but still built on a trailer.
I live in NC. Looking at the DMV website, a trailer is registered the same way as a vehicle except for the odometer reading and insurance is taken from the vehicle towing the trailer. I don’t own a truck or anything else that can tow so that might be a problem too…. Is it still the same with these tear drops? Does it change at all once it’s converted to a living type structure? Where do you go to get the dry weight for registration? Are inspections necessary? I’m trying to plan out what details for when I can build my tiny house on wheels.
So, a few things I’m thinking. 1, (try) registering the trailer itself, build the tiny house on it and leave it as is. 2, register the trailer, build, then try changing it to something else (?). 3, build the house first, then register as a camper/RV or since trailers are considered vehicles, maybe register as a “custom built vehicle” (?)…

This is what I’m coming up with for now. I know this isn’t teardrop related but I thought I would ask since it’s still related by building on trailers, any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Is the trailer something you plan to tow on a regular basis or one you will just move to a permanent sight? What dimensions and weight are you wanting to tow?

Dan in the state of MO you only have 30 days to register a trailer of any kind. If your state is like that then register the trailer first as a utility. Most structures require some type of title or registration so follow your state law as close as you can without asking "them" hard questions. No need to confuse the public servants. 8)

Image to the playground and enjoy the board. All questions answered----some even correct as long as the appropriate visuals included. 8)

For now, tow once in a while. I'm in the military so moving is very likely. Someday, whenever I can buy some land, then it'll be parked for good. The dimensions will be about 7'x16' and around 5-6k lbs.

I figured I would post the trailer I'm looking at getting.Trailer

I also found the search link listed above... Been trying to find something. It almost seems that register as a utility first makes sense. I'm still not sure if there are different registration requirements for Campers/RV/Travel trailers so I'm still trying to figure that part out. Maybe I won't have to change anything once my Tiny house is built (?).

Dan

I'm in CA so registration will be somewhat different, but registering the basic chasis as a utility trailer as soon as it is done gets your your tags but also makes picking up all the sheet goods, the long boards (before cutting) etc. a whole lot easier, use the trailer as the utility hauler to do your shopping during the build.

Best of luck with your build, keep us informed as you go, and ask all the questions you like.

this is so people will have an idea of what i'm looking at building.
It's going to have the basic floor plan like this but slightly modified:
http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/houses/epu/
but with an open ceiling/loft access like this:
http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/houses/lusby/

The "Epu" is origionally 14' long and the "Lusby" model is 18' long, I'm looking at going half way at 16' long and thinking of going without a front porch. Plenty of pictures to look around at. I also have a picture of my modified floor plan on my blog.

WOW!
That's not a TTT, that' a mobile cabin, now that is neat. Don't think I'd want to pull that around the country but for short moves like from the fishing hole to the hunting base camp

Maybe for someone like me, a moblie observatory....oh my
I did not see this, I did not see this, I did not see this.........
